Two Jupiters from the 17th March with the ASI174mm.

Here are two images from the 17th March taken with the new ASI174mm Camera. One of these is a reprocess (22:55UT). I'm not sure why I struggled with this first time round but a fresh approach seems to have ironed out a lot of the initial problems I was having!!

I think seeing was fair to good, probably the best I have had this year and likely now to be the last for getting some nice detail although by and large the recent seeing has not favoured planetary imaging that much!!

First impression of the new camera for planetary work is that I believe it is going to be at least as good if not slightly better than the 120mm. Certainly there is less noise on the live feed which has often been problematic for the 120mm cams (for me the 120mm-s had issues with noise lines being apparent in the final stacks on some occasions).

Anyway hope you like the images.

Regards,

Pete.

I'm no imager, but the latest pics I'm seeing taken with ASI cameras seem to be amazing. Are they a big step forward? I've not seen albedo detail on Galilean moons with a C8 before!

Really nice image, incredible detail!

Super images Pete! Firing on all cylinders again with those for sure! Its surprising how the different pixel size can effect processing especially wavelets but you've nailed these for sure. Wish I'd stayed out longer on the 17th....took one shot then packed up because trans was poor!

To second Nick here Pete - look brilliant on my Monitor screen. Great detail and colour. Beautiful!

Thanks! Are the ASI cams a big step forward? Well for me they were/are as I moved over from an OSC Imaging Source DFK cam some time back and the improved resolution was immediately noticeable. It's difficult for me to say how they compare to other high end mono planetary cams as I haven't used another manufacturers mono cam, but certainly if the likes of Damian Peach is using the ASI then I would think they have the edge at the moment.

i would say the high frame rates and the lower cost of the ASI cameras do put them ahead of certainly the Imaging source cameras of which i do own a DMK21au618. I have never done a side by side test, but it would an interesting "shoot out"
