Apollo 1 Tragedy

Today, 27th January 2017, is the fiftieth anniversary of the tragic fire in the Apollo 1 space capsule which took the lives of NASA astronauts Ed White, Gus Grissom, and Roger Chaffee. The Apollo program followed on from Project Mercury (1961-3) and Project Gemini (1965-7) and ultimately would successfully put men on the Moon.

Watched a documentary about it recently and as with all these things in hindsight it was probably preventable, a very expensive lesson was learned.

Terrible tragedy.

Indeed a terrible tragedy, but we all know they didn't die in vain. How NASA regrouped and delivered the successful lunar landing by the end of the decade still stands in IMHO, as one of the greatest  human and technological achievements.

Thank you for jarring my memory loose, Pat (really). I remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard about this tragedy - the same as I still remember both Kennedy's and the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
