  1. From the album: Deep Sky Imaging

    These nebulae are located in the constellation Corona Australis, between γ and ε Coronae Australis and features NGC6726, NGC6729 and NGC6723. This is not a popular group of objects or part of the sky, but I thought that the combination of reflection nebula crossed by a dark nebulae make an interesting image. This image was exposed through my Celestron 8" SCT (at F10), on the CGEM mount with my full spectrum modded and cooled Canon 40D DSLR for a total exposure time of 5 hours, 59 minutes and 30 seconds.

  2. From the album: Deep Sky Imaging

    This image is a cropped and rotated version of the M16 image to emphasize the famous "Pillars of Creation" part of the nebula, made popular by the HST image of the same name. The color channels are SII, HAlpha and OIII as RGB, and color balanced to remove the heavy green color cast created by the strong Hydrogen Alpha signal. The total exposure time spent on this image was 20 hours and 57 minutes consisting of the following subs exposures: RGB: 13x15s, 19x30s, 17x60s, 12x90s, 17x120s, 15x180s HII: 2x600s, 9x900s, 4x1200s OIII: 1x600s, 8x900s, 1x1200s, 11x1500s SII: 2x500s, 14x1800s All at ISO1600.

  3. From the album: Deep Sky Imaging

    My latest image of the Eagle nebula (M16/NGC6611) in the constellation Serpens, this time imaged through narrowband filters using my 8" Celectron SCT, at F10 - 2032mm focal length, with my astromodded and active peltier cooled Canon 40D DSLR. The color channels are SII, HAlpha and OIII as RGB, and color balanced to remove the heavy green color cast created by the strong Hydrogen Alpha signal.   4. I was thinking about this a few moments ago in reference to the hologram theory, and I just wonder if anyone thought this idea is actually feasible: presume the universe is a continuous hologram/program, set up and coded to form in a grid format. That grid would be what we call the "Fabric" of space. A black hole is a tear in that space (a temporary error in the scripting for that area of space.), caused by the over abundance of information (gravity) applied to the fabric. The script (being a continuously active script) later has to rewrite itself to fix the error (hawking radiation), causing the black hole to evaporate. If there happens to be more information applied to the area of the error (such as a star or gas), the error increases due to the excessive amount of information being applied to the script as it is attempting to rewrite itself to fix said error, thus increasing the size and mass of the black hole. The idea that there was too much information applied to the script and an error formed would imply that the universe is not perfect but is programmed to and capable of fixing itself (Or the creator is fixing it). It could also imply that the universe is actually infinite as well as there being similar versions of the universe (parallels). I was wondering if you think this idea could be possible... obviously I think too much... I'm just a regular guy that loves this stuff and reads articles.

  6. COMET C/2014 E2 JACQUES Meets the OPEN CLUSTER NGC 609 23 / 08 / 2014This is my first attempt at a Comet. After having various issues with stacking and a rogue stretched star as a result of a stacking error. I can finally feel proud after relentless hours spent at stacking and re-stacking this image. I feel proud I managed to process this Comet as well as it looks. I think there is a hint of a tail at the 3 O'clock position but who knows... The bonus is the comet is above an Open Cluster NGC 609 which adds more interest. Conditions were good and if I had set-up the Mount better I may have managed longer subs.   7. Hi, i was just wondering about something. When i try to use 2x or 3x drizzle in DSS i am always confronted with a message about how much memory will be needed to preform it. I have never been able to continue because by laptops memory is always on the red line, i am constantly getting pop ups saying i must make space as i have ran out of memory and i can never seem to find what is taking up soooooo much space. Now, i have an external hard drive with plenty of GBs or space. Does anybody know if there is an option to plug in my hard drive and use that space while DSS does its thing? I know its a long shot but thought i would ask. Would be an awesome option. Cheers.
  8. This always seems to be my "go-to" nebula when I am trying to knock the rust off the gear and get back into imaging and processing mode. This is my first time combining Ha and OIII data using the QSI wsg-8 and first time using OAG. It only took troubleshooting the Gemini-2 (new FW) and getting the Gemini.net ASCOM driver to behave with the SkyX but here it is for this year... NGC 7293 the Helix nebula Constellation Aquarius ~700 light years distant Ha 20min subs totaling 1 hour and 20 minutes. OIII 20 min subs totaling 2 hours. Here's my second attempt withe the ASI120mm with RGB filter from Baader, I tried using the RRGB as suggested by THEO here on SGL for the extra luminance and I do think it's brought out a bit more detail. I know this has been contended before but what's the opinion on the Televue 2.5 powermate as opposed to the Revelation one I using?. Thanks Campbell

    One of my first targets but still trying to get a decent image - clusters are harder than they look to capture due to them being all stars so tracking errors and uncorrected optical problems are very quick to show up in the end result.

  13. Hi There, I hope I have found the right place to post but I am 23 years old (living in Manchester, UK) and have a mission to try and get more of my generation to take the time to look up. I want more people to share my passion and get as excited about the universe as I do. For the last 2 years, I have been working to create a watch which is made with meteoite, to serve as a daily reminder, so people take the time to look up and put all their worries and concerns into perspective. I am reaching out to this staregazing community for help and advice, how I might do this better, also I am hoping to learn and get some feedback - I would love hear what you think of it. In other news I am looking to buy my first telescope and I would be open to as much help on that too!   15. Here is a short clip from the live feed I was doing from my backyard telescope is the San Mateo. I had the live feed on UStream and started it at 3pm and ended around 7:20pm PST. It was windy so thats one of the reasons it was jumpy. [media=]
  16. Decided to brave the warm weather in the San Francisco Bay Area to grab a photo of AR1504 and its friends. I was going to grab video using the Canon 1D MarkIII and the 3x Barlow but the laptop got too hot and turned off. So I decided to take several photos praying I would get a clear picture out of the set.

  19. One of my favorite planetary nebulae is rising in the northeastern sky (above that big oak tree)! The ghostly M57, the Ring Nebula, approx. 2300 light-years away and between 6,000 and 8,000 years old (when the outer layers of the parent star exploded), shot on the Orion Starshoot Deep Space Camera II (at maximum sensitivity setting in color) through the Orion StarMax 127. Here's an image that i just finished processing after finding the lights that were taken months ago on a memory stick that i was emptying and had forgotten about, only had the lights so took some darks this morning by using the chip temp shown in images taken via Backyard Eos. I reckon there's 19˚c between ambient and full speed on my 550d so put it in the workshop with the heating off and seemed to match them well. Needs some more data and my processing is all that but I'm quite happy with it for a surprise find. This image was taken with a Skywatcher 200p, Heq5 Guided via PHD Canon 55D unmodded, Backyard Eos 24 x 180s Lights @ 1600iso 19 x 180s Darks only (taken months later by matching chip temp) Processed in Nebulosity, CS6
  21. To my understanding, matter is just crystallized energy. So is dark matter the crystallized form of dark energy? Sorry if this is a bit of a stupid question, just couldn't get it off my mind. Any answers would be much appreciated - thanks.

August 30th, 2013 Location: Mansfield, England Time: 04:00 - 05:30 Conditions: Light Pollution, Light Cloud, Dew, Wind, Forgot to charge Power Pack, Forgot to turn on Dew Heaters, Seeing: Possibly a 1/5, improving to 2/5 as the GRS came in to view. Equipment: Meade LX90 8" SCT | 2x Meade Shorty Barlow | ASI120mc | Coffee It takes a special kind of nutter to get up at 3:30, set the telescope up and patiently wait for clouds to give you a few seconds worth of window to photograph things so very far away! It was of course worth it, it always is - I could stare at the planets almost endlessly. This is the first time my ASI120mc has been turned towards the Moon and Jupiter and conditions where far from favorable - indeed, after viewing the Moon through what can be best described as a rapidly flowing waterfall that dimmed, bobbed, weaved, and dived; I nearly packed up. Worse still, I'd forgotten to charge my telescope's battery pack since last usage, so slewing was fading rapidly. Still I feel with more favorable conditions, I will be able to get better shots than I've ever had before, indeed these shots beat the old 15 FPS Orion Starshoot IV by leaps and bounds! Saving grace here was ROI, and high frame rates of 50-80 FPS. Though in order to get the exposure through the dew on my scopes surface and try to beat that awful seeing, my gain was maxed out at 100% Jupiter of course takes pride of place here, but I've thrown in two photos of the Moon I took whilst waiting for Jupiter to clear the roof tops.

  25. The definition of a moon is a natural object (or satellite) that orbits a planet. To my understanding Saturn's rings are made up of space debris, and they must orbit around the planet. Does that mean that each individual piece of debris and dust in Saturn's rings, and other planet's rings, count as moons?
