SGL 8 - General Questions?

I learned my Meteorology when I studied for s pilots licence.

I still think the aviation approach to the weather is the best one, you cannot forecast the weather accuratly for more than 6 hours in unstable weather conditions.

The only exception is when the weather is stable, usually when a very large High Pressure system is plonked right over us.

The 6 hour rule is good for planning pub crawls & cider trails as well!

Hi all

i had originally paid another SGL member to share their pitch, as we read that pitch sharing was allowd, just as long as the tents arnt too big or encroach on walkways/other pitches etc. as i am on benefits, this was a win win situation. however, i have since been told to 'watch it'! please can someone kindly clarify where we stand, as as a result, i have now missed the opportunity to book my own pitch (if i could of afforded it!).

cheers

Pitches are booked as 'per pitch' rather than per person. So long as the pitch has been booked and paid for via the link to FLO, and all your tents & cars etc. fit on the pitch (they are pretty generous) there is no problem with pitch sharing.

EDIT: here is the statement on the SGL8 info page

Sharing

You may share a pitch, and the electric hookup with another person - a maximum of two tents per pitch, subject to Lucksall's regulations for fire and health and safety, and abiding by the 4-night rule (see above)

Bob

It would be a good idea to let us know as soon as possible who you are sharing with. We SGL/Admin still need to know these things in advance for a number of reasons.

Please contact any Admin with this information....

Thanks

Just wondering about the pitch size, although I've seen them described as 'generous' can't find anything with approximate dimensions, anybody have an idea?

I only ask as I am torn between which car to take, I can fit more stuff in the larger car but if its more convenient to tightly pack the smaller one so as to get it on the pitch along with the tent I may go for that instead..

The tent is 2.2m x 4.5m

Larger car 4.3m x 1.8m

Smaller car 3.9m x 1.6m

Perhaps seems a little pedantic but I figure that half a metre could make all the difference between the easy life and being a nuisance!

It depends where you are as to the pitch size, I was on the non EHU side last year and was pushed for space on my pitch, had tp park my car on the empty pitch next to me.

the EHU pitches are much bigger though, good for car plus 6-8 man tent, but don't forget you need room for your scope(s) as well.

I'm in a pitch next to the river (without EHU). On the Lucksall website it looks quite small, but on the allocation list, it looks quite big! My tent is 3.35m wide by 4.7m long - without the canopy. Hope it fits! I have no problem leaving my car elsewhere though - as long as I can unload next to the pitch first!

  • 2 weeks later...

Good afternoon everyone!

Just got a question or two if I may. As it is, I haven't booked any pitch or anything, but that's because I live quite local to Lucksall - about 15 minute drive away and I didn't want to book a pitch and use up space preventing somone else from further afield from being able to attend.

I thought I read somewhere that it will be possible to just visit in the evening, but I can't for the life of me find where I might have read that, or perhaps I made that up....? Is that a possibility?

Pending work schedules, I might be able to come over on Wednesday evening and possibly Thursday, with or without my scope depending on the weather to come and meet some people. As a newibie to the Astro scene and a scope owner for all of about 4 months, I thought it would be a good chance to learn and socialise.

Any information would be greatfuly received, and of course, I fully appreciate that I might have got the wrong end of the stick and the gathering is purely on a booking only basis.

Thanks

Tony

People are more than welcome to visit during the day or night. The only major request is that people coming into the astro area at night walk in to avoid any car headlights spoiling the night vision.

Driving in with headlights on normally results in a lot of verbal abuse
