Quite plosslby  😊

Where is it from?

It's a Russel Optics Jeremy. I never heard of them before but its very beautiful. The body is delrin. Ridiculous long eye relief and huge exit pupil. I'll play with it a while but if it doesn't work out I'll see if they want it for the great equatorial at Greenwich- could be a good match for 100x and 7mm exit pupil

Postman brought a Lunt 1.25'' Herschel wedge:

20220708_002116.thumb.jpg.05b82bb5de29d122d060fae1c7765f85.jpg

Sadly, what was not included was the Baader solar continuum filter, or the scope to put the wedge in😬.

The solar continuum filter seems to be out of stock everywhere so will have to make do without it. I have a red #25 filter and a #80A filter, along with some neutral density filters to try with. Some combination of these should cull chromatic aberration and dim the image to safer viewing. Or the scope is in post long enough for the filter to arrive, who knows!

My local shop owner where I purchased my starsense dob from was nice enough to make me a set of collimation screws. He says he sources the screws from hardware shop and has a press to press the heads on, nice! the long ones are for locking and the short with washers are for adjusting.

Wow, I would love to one of these out, just for the fun of it. I know they'd be totally useless in my fast reflectors but I would still like to give it a go :D

Postie delivered an ADM Dual Saddle Upgrade for the AVX mount from FLO.

Nice bit of engineering, not a fault on it.

On first fitting the dec axis would lock up as I tightened the puck bolts, the solution I eventually found, is to slacken off/adjust the nut under the counter weight bar. There are two set screws to loosen a couple of turns, a 1/16 (1.5mm) allen key fits. Now undo the nut about one turn, now fit the puck and tighten the bolts, return to the nut and adjust so the dec axis can rotate without too much play, and re-tighten the set screws.

This may cause the counter weight bar lock nut to now come into contact with the dec casting, and lock everything again, the solution is to fit 16x26mm washers in that nut to space it back from the casting, 3 or 5mm or so.

panic over.

Be careful with the plastic bits around the pegs, they break off easily! I broke all 3 from mine on a cold night out.

These are soft silicone and pliable so should be okay. I’ll pop one in the freezer for a bit and see if it becomes brittle.🤔

Came across this on the bay as brand new stock and while it was listed for reflectors of 76 diameter, the measurements made me wonder if it'd also suit the Celestron LT70AZ starsense scope.

Nice and solid so hopefully more stable than the OEM one, will see if I can find some sort of tubing to make up the gaps at the pivot

image.png.2c400bb80407a860db714eca8618ba2e.png

But it does all fit together (I'd previously bought some wood tripod legs that improved the wobbles)

May not even need to pad those pivot spindles as the screws did just fine. Quick test aimed at some aerials outside and it seems nice and stable and also the scope turns more easily around AZ too so I think for a touch under £30 that was worth doing 🙂

You could pick up a pack of nylon spacers for TV mounts.  Should space without increasing friction

I bought mine from Germany EuroAstro (or something similar). It was sold with NO filters. I had to buy an ND, variable polarised and continuum.

The 3 filters cost the same as the wedge.

I didn't use it much, before I moved onto a Quark Chromosphere. I probably should sell the wedge and filters.

Huh, thats weird that there was no ND3 filter included. Mine is from astroart-store.fi and has a preinstalled ND3 filter in it. Weird that its sold without one as even with the ND3 in the wedge it isnt enough dimming for viewing according to everything i have read.

However did you get Gary Russell to post it to you? I asked him if he still posted overseas a week or so ago and he answered that he no longer posts overseas since he moved to Arizona 😞 I have a n eyepiece of his, 2" 16.8mm fl that I purchased some 15-20 years ago when living in Australia, tis still a great performer. Another small supplier was Paul Rini who also sold extreme fl eyepieces.

Ah sorry for the confusion- I didn't get it direct from Mr Russell but second hand from a well known astro classifieds site. Just had a look at his website though and he has some interesting looking eyepieces and going from the quality of machining and the glass of this one they seem very reasonably priced- what a shame he wont ship outside CONUS. I didn't realise but this is apparently a real "super plossl" with 5 elements like the pseudo Masuyama Eudiascopics etc- shame he doesn't do shorter fl versions too- I do like the PMs I have. They would probably sell like hot cakes!

He does make other focal lengths. I shall probably try to get a couple more of his EP's through Cloudy Nights... Never know, might get lucky 🙂
