  1. I find my worst yearnings come when I see the incredible DSO images here on the forum. All I can do is keep telling myself, patience, patience, patience!
  2. Glad you got some good time with the giants. Saturn and Jupiter will make many long to be astronomers! With my 8" dob, I've yet to get good details on Saturn, but I keep looking.
  3. When a business knows they've got you, they charge what they feel they can get away with. If you need something, you'll pay. If you HAVE TO HAVE something, oh will you pay.
  4. When I see all those stars, all I can think is wow!
  5. I ran the day before to the Ga/SC border to be ready and close. The next morning, worried with clouds off the Atlantic, I drove inland to Columbia. A truck stop had a large empty parking lot, which filled rapidly. It was the first total eclipse for us all and quite memorable. Even my grandson who was just barely 5, still asks, papa when can we do it again? I tell hi., 2024, if Gods willing.
  6. Found this photo from 8/21/2017 and the GAE. It always brings a smile to my face seeing my youngest daughter and youngest grandson staring up at the disappearing sun. SWMBO was in the car, out of the South Carolina heat. She got out during totality. I really laugh when I see the bridge crew on the Enterprise in my wind shield looking up as well.
  7. When I go in to work there are others outside taking a break and I point Jupiter out to them. Most thought it was just a bright star. Several years back the planets were great. As I walked in one of the assistant managers was standing there, unwinding after a tough night shift. He was amazed when I pointed out that including the Earth, you could see 5 of the 8 planets at once. (Sorry Pluto!)
  8. Very nice! I'm in awe with those that can sketch so nice. I feel lucky to sign my name the same twice.
  9. I've looked at Mercury last year when it and Venus both graced my late evening sun set. It seems I do better then than when Sol is rapidly rising in the East. I'm also planning for the November transit, the weather Gods permitting.
  10. When they say "the Northern hemisphere" what ranges do they mean? I thought at 27° I was possibly too low to see any NLC's.
  11. Glad you got to witness it! I really enjoy meteors and treasure every one I get to see.
  12. Very good. I'm looking forward to when the sun is very active.
  13. Observatory is 30m from the house, so I walk that 3 or 4 times between things I forgot and calls of nature. Its elevated 7 ft, so I've the stairs. Then there's a couple more calls of nature, its early morning, I enjoy STRONG coffee and getting older seems to add to need!🙄
  14. Amazing images. What mount are you using? I've an 8" DOB and am looking at mounts, trying to decide.
  15. Walked out to the car for my coffee thermos at 4:30 this morning. Another doctor appointment for SWMBO at 6am. As I stand there, wondering silently to myself, why mornings I work or we have an appointment, the skies are always clear, I wish for a meteor. Looking up at Jupiter which has a very distinct reddish tint, Scoripus to Jupiters right and Sagittarius to its left, I wish for a meteor. I haven't seen a good one in ages it seems. Even my widefield imaging has been for naught. Then a very beautiful meteor streaks just above Sagittarius leaving a greenish blue luminous streak in its wake Made the morning much better.
  16. Very nice. Sometimes I struggle to get a good earthshine, other times it just seems to work right.
  17. Great job. Hope you enjoy the same feeling of accomplishment as I do, as you rest your aching muscles and weary bones.
  18. Many years ago, my brother and I kept 25 hives of bees. Been stung many times and grew used to it, though didnt really like it. It was mostly during working or moving them. Wasps seem to be much more protective of their "space". Encountered under ground nesting wasps when. A child and it was brutal for all those nearby. Had a friend who disturbed a similar nest while clearing land with heavy equipment and it nearly cost him his life. They estimate he was stung over 1000 times. I'll leave wasps alone, till they become a problem. Then I go to the nuclear first strike approach and have no mercy.
  19. Very nice! I find I'm happening when I can get a decent image of Saturn. Still doing single images with an 8" dob and Canon SL1. I've never got any details like that.
  20. Even with my poor eyesight, the differences I see in the equatorial bands are amazing. Jupiter is an incredible world. As always, spectacular images.
  21. I've found it quite surprising how quickly the finder scope will fog up during my early morning viewing sessions, leaving only the brightest of stars visible through it.
  22. Thanks for the heads up. Aren't we still watching for where it passes exactly, to get a better idea of its next pass?
