Break In at the Astronomy Centre Todmorden

I go to the astronomy centre from time to time and am gutted to hear the news.

My mate had over £3000 worth of musical equipment stolen from the boot of his car! It eventually turned up 3 or 4 months later in smackconverters erm I mean cashconverters. There were 2 basses, 2 effects units and a few other odds and ends. Everything was recovered! I think, like specialist musical equipment it will be a bit difficult for thieves to sell astronomy equipment down at the local pub (i can't imagine them lugging an EQ6 around under their coat!) and therefore they'll need to sell through a third party.

I think it's important for people to keep an eye out for this gear a few months down the line because they could be keeping a low profile on it for now as they will know that it will have been reported missing.

Isn't it worth contacting Granada Reports or North West Tonight? - they both have facebook groups and might well be interested in publicising your plight. Worth a try I'd have thought, more likely someone local getting offered the gear will realise what it is etc.

Just a thought.

Best wishes

Vicky

I do hope it turns up and I am sure everyone will be double checking any stuff they see anywhere, be it online or at an open air event,

Anyone who has similar gear to this (legitimately) will probably be finding their gear getting eyed over a bit too,

That is my saddest thought and maybe Peters, that someone from this kind of community "could" be behind it knowing full well the financial and emotional cost of what they have got. :(

Although we are in a science community I take great comfort knowing that there is a judgement coming for all of us someday.

A good moment for me to make a further reply.

I've been almost overwhelmed by the response of the astronomical community with their concern, good wishes and offers of help. It highlights the gulf between the good people and those who choose to deprive others. I would not sanction a "whip round" amongst astronomers however well meaning, I have always prepared to take the risk and it is for me to shoulder the consequenses. At the end of the day, I'm faced with the decision between hoarding my equipment or making it available to the thousands who have enjoyed it over the years. No brainer really! :(

I only live in Halifax and have been restricted by a stroke 3 years ago, but I am having a driving assesment soon in order to get my licence back. When that is sorted I will definately get over to Tod. It is crazy. I didn't know about the observatory until the break-in was made public. All I knew about was the Hebden Bridge Astro Society.

It is a terrible thing to say, but it seems to be the way that society is going (and it doesn't have anything to do with the recession). There is an element who think it is perfectly acceptable to do something like this and not bat an eyelid. And no doubt they will still sleep soundly in their beds. While it is the decent people who suffer. Was the gear insured, Peter????? It might be cold comfort, but if it is you will be able to replace it. It is travesty when it has come to this anyway.

I know people might not want to consider it, but it's entirely possible that it's an astronomer who stole the items.

Really sorry to hear about this, how low can people get. I too agree, it has to be some hard up (or plain sicko) astronomer who knew what he was stealing and the value of the equipment.

What the heck is happening in the UK, as an expat, I am really worried about when I come back to the UK. Heck its 10 million times safer where I am in Bahrain (if you ignore the rubbish in the media).

Again my sincerest hopes that you recover some if not all of the equipment. I can entirely sympathise with you Peter, I know if my kit got stolen I would be completely gutted.

Just a quick heads up guys if anybody does spot this gear i advice not to shout it out on the forum or stuff but to PM an admin or Peter himself if the theifs are watching these forums and see the post they could pull the ad before they can be traced !!

Hope you get all your gear returned peter

Really disgusted to read this thread Peter I am so sorry this has happened to you. It is a true display of character though that you are still willing to give your time and energy to share your interest with the community in spite of the theft.

For what it is worth you have another pair of eyes here looking out for the equipment. Best wishes.

I would not be surprised if we will have to wait a while. With all the attention it is getting smart thieves will lie low for a while before trying to offload the stuff.

Only if they are astronomers... If they aren't into astronomy they 100% won't belong to SGL/UKAI/SCAG etc so won't know the attention it's getting.

Not even if they just Google for news surrounding the break in? Besides, if I were planning to flog the stuff, I would certainly start looking at astronomy fora and sites like ABS.

what utter IDIOTS !!:hello2::mad:

What really bothers me apart from the obvious is, what are they going to do with them when they realise they can't easily fence this lot off ?? Unless they're caught with it I fear it'll get dumped :)

Details of all the gear stolen ought to be continually refreshed in our minds via the sources already used for the next few months-it'll eventually surface I'm sure.

IDIOTS !!:)
