Help me figure out what im missing!

Recommended Posts

Hello all! I recently bought a Meade telescope at goodwill. It says D=114mm F=1000mm f/8.8. I dont know if im missing a piece to it, cause i cant focus on anything. I can see stuff, but i dont know what im doing wrong. Can anyone direct me to a manual or anything?  Im dying to use it.

Get rid of the diagonal. They aren’t for use with a newtonian telescope. The eyepiece fits directly into the focuser like this.

Is there a model name or model number on the base. Will help identify which manual you want.

Also, do you have any eyepieces? You definitely need them. Try them without the barlow. Usually these scopes come with  25mm and 10mm eyepieces. Try the 25mm first, without the barlow.

BTW, why have you got two barlows?

I'm guessing it's a Bird-Jones/Jones-Bird telescope based on the fact that the main tube does not look to be a meter long as the 1000mm focal length would imply and is a relatively fat tube for an f/8.8 scope.  As such, make sure there's an optical element toward the bottom of the focuser.  It would look like a glass lens.  It acts like a permanently attached 2x Barlow element to help correct the spherical aberration of the primary mirror.

Thanks everyone. Ill try out all the suggestions. And i have two barlows cause i just grab any eye piece i find just in case that is the piece i need. So, is what i have mainly for like bird watching or something? I really just want to look at the stars.
