Hi all,

I'm Matt & new to this forum & to astronomy. I am hoping to purchase my first telescope soon with the intention of observation so to better understand our world & learn all I can with the long term goal of astrophotography mainly of deep sky objects. Any suggestions of books to read would be much appreciated.

Namaste

Hi Matt and welcome to SGL, anticipating going down the AP route, then your first port of call is...Steve Richards "Making Every Photon Count. http://www.skyatnightimages.co.uk probably the most widely used book on the forum when it comes to imaging. Any further questions on Astronomy in general, then it is best to post in the relevant sub sections of the forum for advise :)

Hello Matt.

I find any astro book by the publishers "Philips" to be an awesome series of very infomative books and like afor mentioned by teifistar, stellarium is great. Even the mobile app is good.

Clear skys.

Hi Matt and welcome to the forum. +1 for 'Turn Left at Orion' which contains a list of some 100 objects that you can see throughout the year. You can take a look here if you want an example of its layout,

Clear skies and hope you enjoy your stay here.

Hi and welcome

As a newcomer myself I found Turn Left at Orion, as recommended by others to be excellent. But you can't beat sgl really as almost anything you want to know is somewhere here and if it isn't then just ask and someone will answer you

Clear skies

Welcome to the Lounge. :)

I have posted this on a thread before, to try and give some basic things for a new starter.

Hope it helps a little. ;)

Welcome to this fascinating Pastime. :)

Firstly, I'd get a copy of a good astronomy Guide, something like, ' Turn Left at Orion ' or 'The Backyard Astronomers guide' books like these are invaluable when your starting out.

There are also some great free software, you can get to show you what's in the sky at night. http://www.skymaps.com Is something that you can print off, and is very handy.

There's also some software called 'Stellarium '. http://www.stellarium.org/en_GB/

That's great if you have a tablet or phone with you, whilst observing.

The other recommendation is find your nearest. Astro society, and go along, and see what other people have, it's a perfect opportunity to ask questions. :)http://www.firstligh...om/locator.html

Also have a good read at some of the beginners threads on here, they are very helpful, and may well give you some answers.

A must read is this. Please don't expect to see things , as you would on TV or in magazines. http://stargazerslou...-expect-to-see/

But for now your main objective is. ENJOY YOUR STARGAZING. ;)
