Saturn in V. good seeing...Nthn. rift/phenomenon resolved...

We imaged again on Thursday & Friday nights just gone...21st & 22nd local dates: whilst SkippySky only gave "7/10" for the Murray Mallee I make my own adjustments according to all the other weather factors & we decided to take a punt because both the surface wind (very low) & 200hPa Jetstream (low-ish) were running in the same direction.

Left home after a quick removal of the corrector, cleaning & reassembling but did not get there until well after dark at about 9pm due to the very late departure. (about 200km drive)

Punished ourselves by having the air-con all the way flat out to get the scope down as we knew there would not be much time to get the temperature down once we had set up...couldn't find our markers properly so needed to go through all the compass stuff but made sure when we left we wouldn't have that problem again. :)

It paid off with very good seeing on Thursday night: I think the rgb rivals the image from a few weeks back & the "rift" is resolved into a large dark spot (anti-cyclone) with what appears as a wake or "longitudinal disturbance" - or as Prof. Agustin described it "(the) spot seems to be evolving zonally (in longitude)."

I've include r & rgb inverts as they display the bright spots (cyclones) prominently as dark spots in said invert, they "pop out" much more in that type of representation - & some other aspects are also enhanced.

I still have a lot of data to process & even though Friday night was somewhat similar we packed it in after a couple of hours as our hearts were not really in it, having received some sad personal news earlier that afternoon...

I'll dedicate these images to my young friend Dylan, who passed away after only 36 years in a life full of hard knocks he could never overcome...

Clicking on the images displays their full sizes...you might need to click on the .gif animations to get them working - these are the ones at the bottom with the planetary rotation symbol at top centre in each image..

Careful scrutiny will reveal that even taking into account the rgb & r channel images are at slightly different times there are anomalies in the storms/spots revealed - many of these can be found to correspond in the 2 images & others may be quite obvious in one & very faint in the other etc...this is one of the vagaries of various channel resolution as well as WinJupos results - incidentally this rgb image comprised of 135,788 frames (rounded to 135,800 ;) ) & the red 26,289 frames.

Thank you very much everyone for the compliments & also the condolences re Dylan - they're appreciated.

I'll post a North Polar projection map here...I'd like to be able to include it in the first posting I made for this thread but unfortunately it seems that you only are allowed a very short window of time to edit a post before you cannot - moderators..?

Thank you Stu...appreciate the response. :) A bit of an insomniac atm...

No worries. I guess you have to take your chances when they come. Your perseverance is amazing!

Interestingly one of my Astro group received an observing report from the British Astronomical Society discussing your achievements. I quote:

'Over the last week or so, high resolution observations by Australian

amateurs Trevor Barry, Darryl Millika & Pat Nicholas and Anthony

Wesley have detected activity at latitudes greater than 60 degrees

north on Saturn This activity comprises dark spots and a light streak

or rift.

Images taken by Milika and Nicholas have also revealed some small

light spots at some other latitudes.

Further observations are required to monitor the evolution of this activity.

Mike Foulkes,

Saturn Section Director.

Thanks again Stu...yes, that report was issued last Saturday morning our time before we had forwarded these (latest) images & referred to the previous one we'd sent them...

We finally joined the BAA last year - we thought it was only fitting as they have honoured us on a few occasions by placing our images on their front covers... ;)

It's very very good but my brain finds it hard to perceive fine detail when it thinks it's upside down. It's like looking at a picture that is on the under side of a table instead of it being on top of the table?

Thanks for the generous comments folks! :)

RAC, you'll just have to climb under the table for these unfortunately ;) ...it is the manner in which professional organisation desire them because of "scientific convention" - & although we normally create "North up" "aesthetic" representations for the AA forums we have been far too busy involved with working on the Northern storms phenomena...along with personal issues.

Unfortunately, with the time & longitudinal reference texts etc I can't simply "flip" an image for anyone like yourself...it takes a bit more time to create 2 versions & I just haven't been able to do it lately - as our website will also attest...
