Hi guys I have been looking at this forum for awhile and it reminds me of the good old days of the internet when everyone helped each other :) I have recently got my first telescope a Skywatcher Skyliner 250PX Dobsonian, so am new to it all. I've spent a few years learning constellations and major stars just using my eyes but felt it was time to dig deeper :) I have been telling myself I'm not interested in astro-photography as I cant compete with Hubble etc but the real reason might well be the costs of going down that route ;) At this stage I'm just excited to go and find and track DSO's manually and "learn the trade" so to speak, the only upgrade I've made so far was a Telrad from reading these forums I just couldnt be doing with cricking my neck to look through the supplied finderscope! I will however be looking at some new lenses a nice one for planets would probably be my first and was wondering what folks recommend to go with the 250PX?

Welcome along. 250px is a great scope and will show you no end of treasures. As you have already mentioned, some new eyepieces will probably be on the agenda once you get the hang of things. Will be lots of people on here happy to point you in the right direction.

Hi, Hypsicles, a warm welcome to SGL - and to the worlds of amateur astronomy! First off, that is a very nice scope you have there (I have had the same for a few years now, and am very happy with it.) As to eyepieces it depends on how much you want to pay! I use  BST's in my scopes. These cost £49 each (From Alan at 'Skys the Limit' on the net) and work well with the 250PX (and my other scopes too!). You may also be interested in the free planetarium "Stellarium" which is very useful for planning a viewing session, and gives a realistic idea of what you should be able to see at the eyepiece (Downloadable here: http://stellarium.org/en_GB)

Hope that helps,

Martin.

You are most welcome

Would love to hear your "first light" thoughts on your new scope. I have a sw 200 and love it!

With regards to eps I really would advise using the stock eps for a while to get accustomed to the scope before spending further.

However you may want to think about a good binocular. I have a Celestron 15 x 70. A really good partner for my scope.

It's also a good idea to check out any local astro club. Lots of knowledge to be tapped into and if they organise observing nights you may get a chance to try out other folks eps and see what works best for you and also your scope. It's very easy to get carried away in the beginning and spend money rashly, we have all done that!

Enjoy

Don

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome and sound advice, the choice of telescope took awhile but reading these forums cemented my choice and forgive the pun but I'm over the moon with it :) Speaking of which the moon looked simply stunning particularly at the edge where you can see more relief on the craters I zoomed in using my 10 mm EP and 2x Barlow. Seeing Andromeda for the first time I couldn't believe how big it was clearly larger than my 25mm EP to view albeit v faint at the edges. Looking forward to a good viewing night to take the scope to a nice dark spot nearby for better light gathering than I get from my garden.

HIP3802 thanks for the pointer on Stelarrium I have just grabbed a copy and like the fact it's open source, I had been using Starmap HD on my Ipad which is pretty good too but it costs a bit.

Roadrunner not 100% sure what you mean by first light...initial impression/ usage? I already have the exact Binos you suggest and love them :) Wise advice too on getting used to my EPs first, window shopping on FLO is a pricey business but I like to plan purchases in advance.

Finally thanks for all the clear skies wishes.....really need those living in the Lake Distrct!!
