Water ice confirmed on Mars !

I know that the Phoenix mission has it's own thread but I thought the latest findings deserved a post of their own.

NASA have confirmed the existence of water ice in the trenches that Phoenix has dug and the photo's seem to show it evaporating over a period of a few days. Here is a link to the appropriatepage on the mission web site:

This seems a pretty significant discovery to me

There must be quite a buzz within NASA at the moment !

great stuff, now all we have to do is pollute marsd enough for global warming and boom ,liquid water lol.

got a cunning plan involving our polluted atmosphere, mars and a rather large vacuum cleaner.

hmm now to get that funding

Shouldn't be too much of problem polluting Mars - we're kind of experts at it now!

Find proof that there is oil on Mars - you will have all the funding you'll ever need!

Why look for oil when there's a shedload of Iridium-3 on the Moon... oh.. of course, NASA, ESA and China are already starting the race... (In the name of human exploration they all say) ahem... $£$£$£$£$£$£$

So why are we all excited by finding water.

I assume it means life is possible, but again why is this so exciting. I am a real party pooper when it comes to this sort of thing but who cares.

We have enough people on earth to invade, and ruin their countires in the process, before we even start to think about others.

Were human (unfortunately) which means we have an overwhelming need to understand everything and usually in the process damage it.

Yeah!, substitute "Man Terra Forming Mars", with "Man Terrifying Mars", and that would about sum it up. We really have to pass the "Being Civilized"test, before we consider inflicting ourselves on another world.

I think you'll like this quote from the Matrix ....

"I'd like to share a revelation that I've had during my time here. It came to me when I tried to classify your species and I realized that you're not actually mammals. Every mammal on this planet instinctively develops a natural equilibrium with the surrounding environment but you humans do not. You move to an area and you multiply and multiply until every natural resource is consumed and the only way you can survive is to spread to another area. There is another organism on this planet that follows the same pattern. Do you know what it is? A virus. Human beings are a disease, a cancer of this planet"

:)

 Chilling but true observation.

I'm a fan of "Calvin & Hobbes" by Bill Watterson.

One of the cartoons sees Calvin explaining his sci-fi story to Hobbes, wherein the aliens come to earth, drain it of all its natural resources, damage it irrevocably, and do all this because it was in their economic interests.

When the tiger pulls a face, Calvin asks "Is it too far from the truth?"

Hobbes says "No, it's too CLOSE to the truth."

I dont think there has ever been a more myopic civilisation than the one we have presently.

Cheers

TJ

Some Humans are definitely a cancerous presence on Earth who I would very much lik to see them flying off to some other planet, in the very near future (...should I get into politics?!?...better not  ).

So why are we all excited by finding water.

Because someone would be very thirsty after a year in a space ship...... :)

And you need to wash your hands after going to the toilet. :pottytrain5:

:) Becoming an Austronaut is a fascinating thought, with images of looking at our planet from above the atmosphere, and close images of our Moon, BUT no means to wash much? I don't think so :nono:
