  1. Well, clear forecast + gusty winds + no moon = got to give it a go!

The sky was incredible last night! Shame about the wind.

I am so bummed out, last night was excellent, I setup for 5 hours of data capture and went to sleep after 25min of subs where in. Woke up this morning to find that PHD had crashed and ruined all my subs aarrrrgggggggg

Well at least I got 5 good uns :(

    4. PhotoGav

      PhotoGav

Aargh, that is a proper bummer. I end up snoozing on the sofa and just checking things every now and again through teamviewer on the iPad. Last night turned out good for me - OIII & SII subs for my Heart mosaic. Haven't managed to find the strength to process it yet though - last night was a late (early am) one! Just back to the PHD crash - that kept happening to me because I wasn't using a powered USB hub. Have one now and it's sweet...

  2. Excellent - they used my pic of M31 on S@N, I blinked and I still didn't miss it!

+1 well deserved, keep up the good work onward and upward

  3. Can anyone tell me when there is even the slightest chance of a clear night all night in southern England? Really losing the will with all this darn cloud. Where in the world should I choose to move to for clear skies?!

Above the clouds - perfect! I keep on consoling myself with the idea that surely it will clear up soon and we will have so many clear nights that I can't cope with the lack of sleep. Even solar is a big ask and how can I possibly just give in to the Moon, my nemesis in all this... Yes, a desert far far away is very appealing. I dream of bunging all the kit in the camper van and setting off for southern Morocco.

Supposed to have had 3 cloudy nights, just been outside and it is clear for the 3rd night. Flaming cold however but clear. I know weather is "chaotic" but this is plain inept.

    4. AstroAndy

      AstroAndy

Ha! I finally know what binning subs in the UK means. They go straight to the bin! 3 times I set up lately, things worked nice, clouds came in. And fog. So thick I could see it floating past my eyes. Three or more weather charts do I consult. The few times I went to my dark sites, guiding didn't work, and my cam to PC connection broke. In my 5 years in the UK, I have never gotten used to the weather patterns here, nor do I wish to. After my 6th year, I must seriously consider movi...

  4. Why oh why is this country so cloudy....?!

Imagine the very long summer days without some cloud cover! The sun will turn vicious and plants will suffer..to put it in a non-scientific language.

I don't mind cloud during the day...!

Me neither...not fan of sunny weather myself :)

  5. Argh, it's cold out there. Been doing some Jupiter captures for an hour, had to come in to warm up a bit. How do visual folk survive?!

Hopefully... It's all processing now. I was getting about 65fps, so fingers crossed. I was also trying out my new powermate..... I knew I wouldn't hold out long!

Since I got the QSI683, WO S71 & Astrodons I've managed precisely 1 hour of HA

      Stargazer33

Looking in my astrophotography folder on the PC, my last imaging session was the Whirlpool Galaxy and Saturn on 16 May!!!!

    4. PhotoGav

      PhotoGav

It's rubbish. I am currently hypothesising about what a set of Ha subs of The California Nebula shot through the WO Star71 would look like and how easy it would be to tease out all the detail thanks to the fast imaging scope employed...

  7. Can't make it to SGL XI next year, so made up for that disappointment by hitting the buy button on a WO Star71 - apologies to those in the south for the imminent cloud out...

With the associated inevitable cloud, it may be a while before my first light post, but it will come eventually!

  8. Has Clear Outside completely lost it's mind recently?! Current cloud cover prediction = 0%. Actual cloud cover = 100%...

I've never had it accurate once. I stick to the BBC, take the two nearest towns to me and view their forecasts. Can then work out if it is actually going to be clear or cloudy.

  9. Argh - last night... Perfect clear forecast... All set up... Clouds roll in... Game over...

know the feeling mate, looked good here but when i setup loads of high cloud and poor seeing...

Looks the same here for tonight, clear blue sky all day, light grey horizon to horizon cloud now.

      MarsG76

I feel your pain... Happened to me 3 times in a row!!!

  10. But it's not meant to be cloudy....... :-( what's more I've suffered massive gremlins in the system so far this evening... Why is this such a testing pastime?!

    1. PhotoGav

      PhotoGav

Perfect clear sky, perfectly dark, finally gathering subs, sat back in the deck chair scanning the sky, iridium flares, satellites, shooting stars, the Milky Way, even M31 is a faint smudge with the naked eye. I now remember why I love this pastime!!!

A corker... Finally brought the camera back in at 5:30! As for the forecast - lucky you! It's dodgy here for the foreseeable now :-(

  11. Just upgraded the focuser on my EdgeHD 800 to a Starlight Instruments Feathertouch and, oh look, it's pouring down with a howling gale out there, no surprise that I will have to wait to test it out.....,

Blowing a gale here too, new goodies waiting to be used also!

I have one on my Edge 8 as well! One of the best upgrades I have done :)

  12. If you can't beat 'em, join 'em - planetary cam now on the C8 and looking forward to a bit of Moon and maybe some Jupiter...

    1. Luke

      Luke

Hoping to get out with my 8 inch SCT for some lunar imaging too, so much fun with the SCT! :D Maybe some Jupiter too. Have fun!

    2. PhotoGav

      PhotoGav

Enjoy the crisp freezing winter sky! I've done my moon mosaic and called it a night. Work tomorrow means that Jupiter will have to wait for another night. Hopefully Monday...

      Will be welcome indeed. :)

  15. I am confused by the forecasts. They all say cloudy, yet its clear. I missed yesterday night because I believed the forecast. So, do I ignore the forecast and set up tonight and hope it stays clear. Do I feel lucky....?!

    1. Earl

      Earl

I dont bother with forcasts now whatsoever they are so often wrong i dont know why they even bother, wish I could get paid to get it wrong 90% of the time....... Cloud sensor and IR satellite gives a far better insight into where its going

    2. PhotoGav

      PhotoGav

Earl, I listened to your advice and just set up anyway. It's still clear out there. Not the best seeing, but I have been able to fiddle about a bit and get the framing sorted for my next project. Fingers crossed for some crisp clear dark skies soon...

  16. So, Met Office says 'clear' and Clear Outside says 'cloudy' - I go with Met Office forecast, but Clear Outside has got it right... Damn! I know what will happen too, as son as I pack everything away - yes, you know too!

    1. Uranium235

      Uranium235

Ive not gone out tonight, there is a massive lunar halo here.... to me, that says "dont bother son!".

And surprise, surprise... the next clear night will be a full moon!

    2. PhotoGav

      PhotoGav

How frustrating?! It was clear-ish earlier and I managed to get the C8 back on the mount and checked my PA. Amazingly it is still very good, despite the mount sitting out there in the weather for months now and with the children kicking balls about in the garden and certainly hitting it every now and again! Now contemplating how long to give it before giving up.......

  17. Could the forecast be true? If so an all-nighter looks possible tonight. Please Cloud Gods, be kind...!

    1. James

      James

Hope its panned out right for you - crystal clear her near Exeter :)

    2. PhotoGav

      PhotoGav

Thank you Cloud Gods! Nothing like an all-nighter... Shame I've got work in a few hours time.... :-) Good to hear it was clear down your way too James.

  18. Oh look, perfectly clear skies forecast - must be a full moon..... :-(

Typical, isn't it? I noticed that last night.

  19. 1800s Subs are lovely, but the 49 darks are taking forever!!

    1. tingting44

      tingting44

you must have some dark skies for 20min subs :D

    2. PhotoGav

      PhotoGav

I'm lucky to have pretty dark skies, though an Ha filter and a faint object help to need 30 min subs!

  20. Clear sky, but I've got bad wind...

  22. Set up & guiding, trying to catch me a Crab... Not convinced of the seeing quality though...

    1. PhotoGav

      PhotoGav

Have a feeling that I'm just silly - seeing is fine, my focus was out... Next sub on its way. Fingers crossed this time!

  25. I've just joined the 1800 club... First 30 min sub successfully gathered at 1422mm - Yeeeehaaaar!

      Knight of Clear Skies

      I'm happy when I get 2 minutes at 135mm. ;)
