Comet C/2023 A3 Tsuchinshan-ATLAS

Recommended Posts

Just got a view in binoculars (10x42) from Tresco.  Dodging high cloud but visible for about 15 minutes, starting 7.25 pm (BST).  Small and no sign of tail beyond about 5'.

I have yet to see what if anything I've captured on my camera.

I had broken cloud to the West, so optimistically walked the 2.5 miles to a suitable observing location. I could see Venus, but the comet eluded me, probably somewhere behind the wispy cloud. Shortly before A3 was due to set, thicker cloud moved across the area and I walked home in the rain!

So, no evening A3 yet, though I did have some nice dusk views across St Austell Bay.

Regards, Mike.

First sight of the comet after perihelion. 18h58 with binoculars 8x42, mag -0.5 (I am rusty at this type of estimation). It took me 20min to find it lost in the sunset glare. 19h First sight with averted vision naked eye. First as a circular smudge. It seems fainter than I expected but I think it was due to the bright sky. As the skies beguined  darkening the tail was visible first with a binoculars 8x42 and averted vision . Around 19h15 I estimate the tail size to be around 30" +/-5". It will be a great show during the next few days.

Very similar to my experience in sw London. I was using 10x50 and was out since sunset. Was very obvious when I located it and it became naked eye with a short tail as it crept down towards the horizon. Lucky to clear skies and no clouds on the horizon and good transparency too.

Argh! I’ve just located the comet in 2 of the photos that I took, but it was in the top, right corner of both - I’d been concentrating on an area too far to its left and too low to the horizon!

Just checked my photos again, at 18.47 the Comet was slightly higher than I thought. Found it above the chimney pot. Had to reduce brightness of photo, and some contrast via phone.

Unbeknownst to me, this is where A3 was. This area did get covered by thick raincloud shortly after this image was taken, but in any case I was looking in slightly the wrong area. The photo was taken at 7:23pm with a 135mm lens.

Yeh can just see it.  I mainly use DSLR'S and Compacts and a laptop for all my imaging. Faststone is a free image processing download I use all the time which is easy to download and use. It has lots of features to crop, edit and enhance your imagery and can be a boon to tease difficult features out. I don't know if its downloadable onto a phone or how useful it will be on a phone device.

Thanks Les

I tried to edit the exposure more on my phone using Snapseed app, I can now see I need to clean my sensor . it was still quite light when I got the photo. The comet must look good in darkness.

Well done Kev

Saw too around 7:30pm. I was a bit worried as the magnitude quoted on Heavens Above was magnitude 1.3 but when I saw it first  in my 7X50 binoculars I was pleasantly surprised how bright it was. Not long after that it appeared  easily to  the naked with a prominant tail. I got a shot of it with a undriven Nikon 3200DSLR  and 500mmfl telephoto ,8sec exposure. I tried some landscape shots with a 18mmfl standard lens  but they didn't come out too well unfortunatly mainly due to the comet sinking into the murk near the horizon.

It's well travelled this comet, here it is sneaking across NE Fife.  Thanks to Dave who showed me how to take the longer 10 s exposure on the phone.

A decent gap in the clouds this evening, was able to see the comet naked eye. Clouds crept in again before the comet met the horizon. The tail is impressive

great pics everyone

Yes, same here, then maybe next Tuesday. Wonderful pictures, indeed, reminiscent of the classic illustrations of Great Comets. Looking forward to hopefully seeing it myself!

Regards, Mike.

When I thought that clouds came for the winter to stay (winters are just clouds where I live) the sky surprises with one evening with clear sky! Quickly packed and went to nearby town, which has more light pollution that I expected, but got this decent image on the phone (ignore weird line of stars, not sure if it's starlink or reflections from below).

Comet and the tail are clearly visible with the naked eye and with 10x50 binoculars it looks better than in photos.comet.thumb.jpg.e9ccfe99e379e586a9559e6790d77333.jpg
