What did the postman bring?

Since September i've started on a considered survey of the so called Herschel 400 list and i'm using Steve O'Meara's observing guide to structure target lists for the month. However I'm not big on following lists slavishly AND the H400 list itself is a modern construct AND the H400 is only a small subset of Sir William Herschel's observations and sister Caroline's cataloguing efforts. If you're observing an NGC there's a 1/3 chance they found it or catalogued it for the first time. in short its easier (and more fun) to collect observations for any (i hesitate to say "all") Herschel in a given area even if you are ostensibly chasing and recording the H400 subset in that locale. This should keep me occupied...

More bits for the 50ED Travelscope project - Bresser T2 spacers in a variety of sizes from 5mm to 30mm which seemed to be the best value for money. Bit shiny though!

Also has a connector for SCT which could come in at some point.

Finally, thanks to my somewhat slow Sister-in-Law network, arrival of a Vixen HR 1.6mm, courtesy of @HollyHound .

These are superb eyepieces Magnus, though I’ve only used mine on a few occasions. Really glad I got the whole set.

I’ve read somewhere the 1.6 is the shortest available eyepiece anywhere. I’m looking forward to trying it on my Kowa spotting scope (510mm => 318x) and my LZOS 105 (650 => 406x), both of which are supposedly superbly figured so should be able to support the magnification. I don’t suffer from floaters AFAIK but we’ll see… I’ll report as soon as I can get to use it

Have to say, I am surprised the Tak diagonal doesn't come with dust caps...

The zen of Tak is appreciating minimalismm🀄

But indeed it’s a bit surprising.

Super diagonals, though

I've had the Celestial Objects volume 2 (Dover edition) for many years, but took a notion to have the Solar System volume at last. It's out of date of course, but I wanted it for the descriptive writing, which is rather charming and engaging. The cover design is truly awful. Appears to be a facsimile made from a physical copy in the library of the University of California, but legible and serviceable, though looks to be missing a map of the Moon, which may have been a fold-out in the original volume, as there's an index to the map with nearly five hundred features listed, and two blank pages in the Moon chapter.70A01976-554C-4E46-BFF1-AFB8F62742D3.thumb.jpeg.11f0733a197031163c9e40604e9c1599.jpeg

Just bought myself back two eyepieces that I foolishly sold being the Nirvanas 16mm and 7mm. I have also ordered another two. the 13mm and 4mm. I am also waiting on the 10mm being delivered as I recently bought it from an SGL member. Has anyone else bought an eyepiece that they had previously sold?

I haven't sold an eyepiece then regretted it, but I have sold a telescope and regretted it. Not for the telescope, which was an average performer, but the Charles Frank equatorial mount that went with it. A beast of a thing, solid, weighty, and with the optional thrust races fitted, smooth in operation. I think it might have withstood a small nuclear explosion.

Lovely addition to a lovely old FS78 👍..looks like yours is a 1994 build, Chaz?

I installed one a couple of years ago on my 1999 FS128, great bit of kit. You got a bargain, I paid more than that used!🤦😊

Wow! Lock ‘n load!

I haven't got round to figuring out the date of manufacture, but I can give my serial number, sv0:047 if that gives a clue.
She’s a beauty and hopefully, for life, all the other scopes I have I can live without, including the TV101NP!

My next goal is my ep collection, lots to consider there. And then there’s the 2” diagonal!

I will need to buy another case now to accommodate the five Nirvanas. You tend to overlook these things until they arrive.

The serial number is shown on the stamped blue plate with silver script on the top right of the focuser, see photo..1481220724_IMG_20221022_154333735_HDR2.thumb.jpg.9b16ed9ef1002d845fb198267094d330.jpg

On my scope, shown above, the stamped 5 digit number shows the year of manufacture (first two characters "99" ie 1999), and the number scope that scope was, of that  type, made in that year (008). So, my scope was number 99008 , ie the eighth FS128 scope made in 1999.

HTH,

Dave
