I've just got back from Wales - here was my travel kit. On this occasion I was able to smuggle the ST120 into the boot of the car. See if you can spot it in the first photo.

It's not as small or exotic as the other travel set ups here but it did a good job and I got one good observing session. I use a big towel to wrap things up in the travel bag to stop things knocking around.

Tomorrow I head for the Galloway coast with the hope of some dark skies.

My travel kit consists of an Ercole mount on a Berlebach tripod and this lot...

...and a Quark and a box of bits and bobs.

Slumming it in the south of Scotland ?

Have fun Derek! So, what's the little Red, Green, Blue, White tiny filter thingy in the last image??

I have a caravan and space is at a premium so I bought this little Meade 80mm triplet apo for this purpose.  Since paid more for the focuser and rings but what can I say, it's worth it.

In the box is squeezed a Lunt wedge and filters,  solar and two optical finders, a 2" diagonal,  Oiii and UHC filters plus 24mm, 15mm Panoptics plus Barlow element and a Nagler 6-3mm zoom.  Along with my Giro iii this gives me a few options for quick sessions.  Let's see other solutions :0)

Here's mine in southern Spain having travelled in hand luggage (the tripod and head went in the hold).

150mm Mak - lovely sharp views

60mm Lunt solar scope for day night combo

finder scope, eyepieces, charts, notebook, red torch and sketching kit fitted around

Padding provided by t-shirts etc

its a bit warm looking at the sun as it's over 30degC at breakfast time but very pleasant exploring the moon and planets in tshirt and shorts into the small hours. Deep sky observing has been limited as there's a lot of Saharan dust in the air which when combined with the full moon gives the sky a very washed out look. Once the full moon moves on, the deep sky observing can begin.

  • 9 months later...

Found this thread linked from CN(!).

I have an 80 Equinox (the baby :bunny:) to complete my family of 120, 100 & now the 80 for travel. So need a back pack for it, RACI & star 1.25 diagonals, semi-apo filter, a barlow, zoom & finder ep. Which leaves a stable enough mount & tripod.

Would a SW Pronto be good enough, & what tripod to go with it then?

That has to count as the smallest ever Derek! Very nice. I assume you can reach focus now? Which Prism did you use?

Generally I take my full rig with me in the UK when I travel to astro camps.

But this is my abroad travel kit:

Ioptron sky tracker and DSLR (next time I will take my cooled CCD camera).  This is set up on the patio of our friend's apartment in Southern Spain.

I modified a cheap mirror diagonal to reduce the light path by about 10mm. It's not ideal but it does the job for now and I have a Meade Prism on the way that I bought from an SGL member yesterday.

Here's my new travel kit : Celestron Granite 7x33 ed  fov 9.1*. Took these with me on my last trip to Cornwall instead of my WO ZS71ed ( now sold). I enjoyed it so much that this will be my travel kit from now on. Good for both nature and astro.

Great setup Mike :icon_biggrin:

May I ask, what is the total weight of the scope + mount (including tripod) ?

Thanks

Don't have this figure in my head. I'm currently residing in a hotel, so I'll have to improvise. I think they have scales down in the fitness room - can I get back to you after breakfast? ?

You can specify what you want weighed; the setup as pictured (with accessories), the bare OTA with one tube ring and mounting foot (the other tube ring is currently only used to hold the RDF) or anything in between.

I don't want to put you to any trouble Mike. When you get home from your trip will fine. The weight of the setup as pictured would be interesting to me.

Many thanks

As well as I can determine on the scales, 4800-4900g. as pictured, with 5mm T6 Nagler.
