SHOW US YOUR MAK.......

Recommended Posts

This is my favourite mak of the ones I've owned. It's an Intes (despite the Orion sticker !) MN61 an F/5.9 maksutov-newtonian. Lovely scope, great optics and very well put together by the Russians

My 7" Meade Mak on CG-5 ASGT with internal weight removed for faster cool down, now only 7.5 Kg for the bare OTA. 3.5Kg weight removed. Fan reversed to suck air in, Excellent optics, very good on Mars at 206x, quite a lot of detail visible. Pity about the blue cloudy coating on the secondary. ;-

My second hand year 2000 C11 (ex-CG11) Starbright (non-XLT) SCT, optics set #3678. Very good, possibly excellent optics, outperforms my excellent 7" Mak on Double Stars and on Jupiter. Primary mirror off center (or secondary, I can't work out which, possibly both) which can't be cured with collimation, which causes "chromatic slice" or "colored coma" effects at some axial rotations of either of my diagonals, at 700x. Still gives excellent diffraction limited images at 350x and 700x. At 700x Stars are hard round balls of light surrounded by one bright-ish ring and some much fainter ones, very good contrast. Double Double is very easy, so is Delta Cygni, not had chance to try on anything more challenging yet. Image shift about 1/5 FOV at 700x. Works great with my CG-5 ASGT, 2 second damping times at 700x after touching focusser, not bad, GOTO has most things at the inner FOV at 88x. Perfect tracking for such an overloaded mount. ScopeStuff 6" counterweight extension bar. 5kg, 3.4Kg and 1.8Kg weight used for 10Kg approx. of counterweight. All fairly easy to lift and mount at waist height. Easy, comfy observing on dining room type chair or small padded stool.

What is it Jules?

Dont worry, i still have the 120ED, but i found myself needing a grab an go set up, so when i heard about this "Monster mak" i had to go for it, i had one a few years back and kinda regretted letting it go, so here we have a little travel/grab an go 102 Skymax on a Celestron EQ3 mount, nice and stable, ideal to take to Mukar camping (dont think i would be happy leaving 120 in a tent for some badboy to steal)

...plus a few accessories.

What did your 'modding' involve Philip? I'm just about to sell my 105 ETX - despite it having the most superb optics. Just have too many telescopes!

But yours looks very nice indeed

Below is what that I have done to my 'modded' ETX...

1. rear back plate from a billet of aluminium, (this replaced the original ETX back as the original got damaged after falling from one of my mounts), c/w an 1.25" eyepiece holder - made by Stephen Mogg.

2. an eight inch SkyWatcher dovetail bar attached by two Jubilee rings/hose-clips. I did not want to drill holes and securing with short machine screws or bolts through the OTA.

3. the accessories in the foreground are...

  • 1.25" star diagonal
  • 1.25" aluminium eyepiece projection unit*
  • 1.25" aluminium eyepiece adaptor* for the brass e/p
  • 123mm vinyl end cap (for use as the objective cover) as I have lost the original screw on cover.

* made by Beacon Hill Telescopes
