My son (aged 6) and I have spent every clear evening this past month stargazing (naked eye) from the very light-polluted street just outside our front door. We're complete beginners but have managed to identify and learn the names of the stars in the Winter Circle and have enjoyed the beauty of Jupiter and the Moon inside the Circle. His eyes are much better than mine - he says he could see 6 stars in Pleiades...I can only see a faint smudge.

We've downloaded Stellarium, started a logbook of what we've seen, and are planning to buy some decent binoculars for a trip to dark countryside in a few weeks time.

Can't wait :)

We look forward to lots of advice!!

William

Hello and welcome William & son

Binoculars are a great way to start due to the wide field of view they provide  to enhance your enjoyment try to find something to rest them on whilst viewing, this will limit any handshaking and give you a much better view ( even a broom turned upside down works)

Hi William (+ little one) and welcome to the forum. As prospective binocular owners, you might like to take a look at this website which offers some great advice regarding buying and mounting 'binos' as well as providing a monthly observation llst of great objects to find. In addition you might also want to consider purchasing, "Turn Left at Orion" which is a great book detailing some 100 objects that can viewed throughout the year. Contains both written and pictorial guides on how to locate the chosen objects along with some interesting information to help you understand what you are looking at. You can take a look here to get a feel of the typical layout. The book is designed for those with modest equipment such as small scopes or binoculars but it is also a good enough guide for later on when you upgrade your kit to something a little larger. Not the cheapest book out there but offers great value for money, with the latest edition being in a spiral bound form that makes it easier to use "in the field".

Clear skies for now and hope you enjoy your stay here.

Hello from Norway to William & son  .  Sounds really great for both of you to share a hobby.

You know you have a good chance to influence what your son wants for Christmas for the next sixty years or so :icon_santa:
