Just joined and looking for a local society and dark skies

Hi,

I've decided to learn more about astronomy, I'm fortunate as I received a Celestron CPC925 GPS for a birthday gift.

I've looked at Saturn, the moon and the Orion Nebula and I've also taken some photos through it using my Canon DSLR however I'm keen to get more from the scope.

I'm in Cheshire about 10 miles from Joddrell Bank

Any suggestions as to what to do next please?

start looking in the social groups section.you will be spoiled between lakes,lancashire and wales from your area.for dark skies it depends how far you wish to drive as north wales is right on your doorstep and  an hour to the west could get you some pretty dark skies.

Jupiter is now a good candidate for planetary and do not dismiss the Moon either. If you find any dark sky please send some my way, I am not too far away.

Try Macclesfield Astronomical society, they can't be too far away from your location.

Dont know about dark skies but some clear skies would be nice sometime soon!  Been out 3 times in the last month and each time only for an hour or so before clouds come in.

If you don't already have it, I can recommend the free planetarium software Stellarium, it's ideal for planning observing sessions and identifying objects. You can also find a pdf of Messier and other deep sky objects here.
