Neptune - iR610nm & false colour images & animations + Uranus. (plenty of storm activity)

Hi SGL'ers - we took some R&R after doing the mods on the C14 (which were a great success) where we did some kicking back around campfires in various locations after doing 2 nights of imaging Uranus & Neptune out in the Murray Mallee.

The 2nd night was the better night for imaging...we usually use the iR610nm for both these planets but found the 685nm gave better contrast for Uranus cloud belts, although the lower light through-put meant we went from 25fps using the 610nm to 12.5fps using the 685nm.

Neptune of course needed all the light we could get so the iR610nm was used thereon - still a respectable 12.5fps however...

Plenty of storm activity on Neptune's disk which is the subject of ongoing recording...it's very satisfying to pull detail such as storms & cloud bands from something nearly 4.5 billion kms away..! :)

Thanks fellas - I've made an iR-RGB using a colour capture from the same session of the iR685nm Uranus image...so not a "false colour" like the others: unfortunately we did not shoot a colour capture (using the "L" filter) during the Neptune captures so that'll have to remain a false colour rendering. ;)

But for a "silly season" image I'll also include a mega-Neptune, which although hugely up-scaled doesn't seem to have lost any integrity..! ;)

No storms evident on Uranus - but plenty of action on Neptune..!

Thanks Peter, James & Michael! :)

James, just a couple of modifications to get the scope performing at its best...primary mirror support to maintain collimation better during imaging & fans to push & pull the air in & out of the 2 vents this model came with: "Tempest" make a commercial product but I built my own with 108cfm fans & we're really surprised at just how quickly the temperature comes down with them in operation...

A couple of images which are hopefully self-explanatory...also being the silly season here are the 2 best images/captures of Neptune from that night in a 450% of capture scale animation, in mono & false colouration.

Might need to click on the .gifs to get them moving...  :)

Some very neat mods there Darryl.  I particularly like the locking system for the primary mirror.  Is the thermometer measuring internal vs. external air temperature, or at two different places inside the OTA?

Thank you for the additional comments fellas - as I said in my other thread on Saturn we've been away a few days & haven't been able to reply...

Stuart - looks like there must have been a few of these cameras in stock...noticed you have one now...interesting to see your results! :)

Your images always absolutely blow my mind! Your skies must be fantastic as well but your level of skill when it comes to capture and processing are the best I've seen. You really are inspiring. One day I hope to aspire to even an eighth of the level of quality you produce in your images and I'll still be ecstatic about the resultant image I produce! Thanks for sharing with us. Such neat modification work too.
