Justifying your eyepiece collection: What do people say

Ok I have been reading a few threads on EP's recently including this one the most recent http://stargazerslounge.com/topic/252648-the-perfect-number-of-eypieces/ andI have noticed quite a few people (No names  ) justifying their eyepieces or giving reasons why they need JUST ONE MORE to fill a space they have.

Actually I think we have all done it. Lets face it, EP's are the visual astronomers crown jewels. We all love to upgrade for one reason or another and come out with a range of reasons for doing so, and why not.

Afterall, the swmbo would only spend it on shoes otherwise  or we would spend it on something else less worthy. EG new cooker even though the existing one is ONLY 15 years old.

So whats your current reason for wanting to add to your EP collection, it can be to plug a gap, a certain specialist viewing option, to have a better FOV, just because you can or whatever else you like.

I will start with I am considering getting a 6mm eyepiece for star viewing/splitting, the Moon and for when conditions allow to push it that little bit further on planets. Considering the WOptics SPL or a vixen SLV or similar.

SOHHHHH, whats your reason?

Steve

PS. This could get interesting.

PPS, I cant tell you whats in the SPACE TO BE FILLED in my sig but trust me its filled but not arrived and its annoying estwing not knowing

Yes.. I'm helping the Chinese economy recover, which in essence is helping all of us and thus leading to a better pension for me... only If I buy now that is... If I wait we could end up with a fracking rig in her flower beds to make ends meet in the future..

I think she's bought in to it...

Oh and +1 for the slv.

mm.. generally I don't like the idea of having a lot of things if I cannot use them. The same for eyepieces. Therefore, I just prefer to have a small but efficient set which is portable on F4.5-F6 telescopes, which are those I am interested in. To answer your question more specifically, my recent eyepiece purchases addressed FOV, compactness, exit pupil in order to cover as many targets as I could. This was always considering a future dobson for DSO.

I don't plan to buy other eyepieces. The Naglers I have make me fully happy. I DO plan to buy a dob 10" when is the right moment for settling and buying a car though!

My wife and I have an unwritten rule. She doesn't question what's in the boxes that arrive for me when I'm at work and I don't question what appears on the the bank/credit card statements that resulted in things arriving for her when I am at work that I never see.

It works very well for both of us

Derek, by reading your signature, it seems your rule works!

Well done!

In my case... no pun intended, I NEED one more to replace 4 that I am moving on..... 2 gone, 2 to go. My reason is that the 4 I'm moving on will be hopefully be used more by someone else rather than sitting in the case most if not all my recent sessions.

I spotted a space in your collection. No 12mm and no 24mm to powermate, cough, cough Panoptic, cough Delos.....  :p

I really don't need any more eyepieces. If Tele Vue bring out Delites in 4mm and 3mm I might get those to replace the Radian's I currently have in those slots but thats all I can see changing now.

I'm very lucky that First Light Optics have kindly loaned me lots of nice eyepieces to try out and report back on and I guess thats kept my craving at bay

Just as well really because my other half is not into shoes, handbags or other expensive trinkets so there is no "deal" for me to do there :rolleyes2:

I just like eyepieces. Of course performance is most important, and what's so interesting about these comparatively small accessories is that they can transform the performance of an average telescope, but I also like the technology, the design, and how different brands approach the market. Love Bill Paolini's book, not just because it points you in the right direction when buying, but because it's a celebration of the astronomical eyepiece.

I read Bill's review of the new Baader EPs today and could not agree more. I also love the design, technological and engineering brilliance of a well-made eyepiece. They are just good things to own. If they lie unused for a while that is fine in my book, I just like being able to lay my hands on a beautifully constructed piece of technology when the time is right to fully appreciate it. I fully admit that I am lucky enough to be able to do that, but I do think that the enjoyment of owning something can be as satsifying as the enjoyment of using it.

That said,

the ethos has gone replaced by a 17.3 delos and 12mm type two nagler

The bgos were sold replaced by 9mm and 7mm type one naglers

The Radians were sold to fund something or other

Planning a 12, 10 & 8mm Delos in the future to fill gaps I feel I have. Honest. There's gaps. No seriously. .....

That said saving for a bf10 currently so no spare funds yet.
