I live in the country where we can get some really good dark skies - so have decided to buy a scope. Decided on a an 8 inch Revelation Dob for observation but know little. Will undoubtedly require help and am hopeful that you will oblige!

You've found the right place for any questions in your new adventure,dont be shy & ask away.

Nice size aperture for a first scope,congratulations.

I would look to upgrade some eyepieces when funds allow as stock ep's that come with most scopes wont Do your scope justice.

Hi Joe,

Warm welcome to SGL.. If you have not already done so download a planetarium program, plenty out there but try Stellarium, its great and free! to be found here :-- http://www.stellarium.org/ along with a copy of 'sky&telescope pocket star atlas' and 'turn left at orion' these will help guide you round the sky.

Fine choice for your first scope.

Thanks everyone for the welcome. Glad the Dob is an ok choice. I have done a bit of research and have identified an astro club though nearest 40 miles away. Intend to download Stellarium, have got 'Turn left at Orion but not yet a star atlas. Had thought of getting a 4.5mm eye piece and a 2x Barlow. Am going to post a question on laser collimators on the equipment forum.

Hi Joe,

Save your cash until you have used your scope a bit. There are plenty of guides on here for eyepieces, two good ones are by Warthog & R Wilkey, if you search for them you will find them. A 4.5mm ep will generate 178X (if you have the f4) so buy a decent one!

If you can wait until you get together with that local astro group so you can see others kit before shelling out!.

Welcome to SGL Joe, we have a South Wales social group on here. Just open Forums at the top of the page and scroll down to Social Groups. You will find us in there.

We have regular meetings at Blaenavon and we have a star party starting at Pencelli Campsite during the week 22nd/26th October.

A good day to come and say hello would be the Saturday. You will get lots of good advice there and a chance to see others scopes.

Another bit of help for your viewing is another free download, which you can print off and use is Skymaps, good for just checking out what your looking for

Just remember, that your not going to see things as they are on TV or in Magazines. Check out this link to get a realistic view of what you will see
