Just joined and can introduce myself as of ( somewhat) advanced years, interested in dark skies and all therein for a long time  and never owned a telescope.   But once borrowed an 8"  reflector designed and built by engineers at a Tyneside  engine works!  Wonderful instrument ( (machine!!)  but  took two sets of hands and muscle  to install and get up and running.  Great hopes of buying first telescope shortly,  and hope that our Northumbrian skies will clear long enough to use it. As of late,  anyone interested in cloud forms will have had a  fantastic time!.

Hi and welcome :)

You can get a nice affordable 8 inch reflector these days that dont need two people to set up.

Have a look at http://www.firstlightoptics.com/reflectors/skywatcher-explorer-200p-eq5.html

and the Dobsonion version http://www.firstlightoptics.com/dobsonians/skywatcher-skyliner-200p-dobsonian.html

Both very capable and affordable.

As for the clouds well lets just not go there lol its a sore subject on here at the moment.

Welcome again and look forward to seeing you around.

Hi Crossway, welcome to the lounge. You've got some nice dark skies in Northumberland :Envy:  If you haven't already been, a visit to Kielder Observatory is well worthwhile -

I'll second this!

We had a week's holiday in Bellingham a couple of weeks ago and booked a couple of visits (both on the same night)  to the observatory.  Unfortunately the night we went was very overcast but it was still a really enjoyable and interesting evening.

I downloaded a leaflet showing a lot of unofficial observing sites in the area.  If I can find the link again I'll post it here.
