Hi everyone,

Just joined the Stargazers Lounge today and thought I would say hello. As a astronomy beginner I'm looking forward to the rich source of information and advice from the forum as I search the southern skies from downunder (Melbourne). I've acquired a York Optics (Australian manufacturer) short-tube 90 refractor on a GEM mount. I've modified a Microsoft Lifecam VX-1000 web-cam for lunar viewing through the laptop where I'm running Sharpcap image capture and then processing (stacking) through Registax 6....good early results. Built a 35% aperture reduction mask (from a plastic vitamin bottle that it's OD fitted perfectly into the dew shield and then removed the cap, which happened to be the exact aperture opening I was looking for..then painted matte black of course) to reduce purple fringing when looking at the moon and this has produced excellent results and improved detail and contrast.

I've mounted an iPhone next to the finderscope running the Skywalk app so I know what I'm looking at in the sky...great app.

Still have much to learn about though and to overcome the early frustrations  of using the GEM mount and the really awkward straight through finderscope (who designed these...a chiropractor?).

Cheers East17 (Gaz)

Welcome to SGL, Gaz. I look forward to seeing your photos and future posts. Regarding the finderscope, no doubt one of the most useful accessories has been to purchase Skywatcher's 9x50 right angle view finder. Excellent magnification, correct image and a breeze to use with the star maps: http://www.firstlightoptics.com/finders/skywatcher-9x50-right-angled-erecting-finderscope.html.

Welcome Gaz , from a fellow Australian , it sounds like you are well under way on the hobby of a life time , enjoy .

Good advise on the 90 degree finder , I have one on my LP90mm APO and they are a god send when viewing high in the sky .

I am in Darwin.

Brian.
