What equipment got you into astronomy?

For me it was Sputnik. I was 5. My first telescope was a 20x50 Carton refractor with a desk tripod. I used to perch it on a table outside and look at the moon. This was in 1969, the year I saw my first comet - Tago-Sato-Kosaka (1969g). -

Got an iOptron SkyGuider Pro from Santa but ever since then, it has either been cloudy or downright raining. All I need now is a decent tripod and clear skies.

This a 15 image stack in DSS. It shows Comet Lemmon, 47 Tuc, and the Small Magellanic Cloud. It also shows severe streaking generated in DSS for which I can find no cure. -
It is supposed to be winter so why do I have chronic hayfever? Perhaps it has something to do with the daffs being in flower and buds on the fig tree.

I think I will resort to a jig. If I cut anything by hand, I'm just asking for disappointment. So I guess the next question is: what kind of drive did you settle for? Tangent arm, friction drive on the sector rim, rack and pinion? As soon as I get the garage cleaned up and stack the 3 cumecs of firewood to be delivered Thursday, it will be time for me to make a start. You give me hope.

Thanks for that. I assume you mean the templates on reinervogels site. Not sure they would work for me as my latitude doesn't coincide with those listed. Also I do not trust my manual skills enough to try and make them. I was sort of hoping an elliptical sector could be formed in a similar fashion to the sectors on the cylindrical bearing platforms ie on a jig. Thanks anyway.

Just brought in the rubbish bin. Milky Way prominent from Carina to past Scorpio. Galactic bulge and dark rifts easily visible. Guess I will have to go and drag out the dob. Hate that :-)

First Light with the 300mm Dob last night. Saturn,M4,Omega Centauri,Eta Carina, Jewel Box, NGC 2516 and cloud.

After a truly cracker summer, (NZ has just had it's worst drought in 30 years), I just ordered a 300mm dob. Rain patterns have returned to normal. Story of my life.
