  1. I've actually read most of the replies to the OP statement. All the thoughts of the fate of the universe are quite interesting. The thought that came to my mind, though I cant remember it exactly, is the serenity prayer. I cant change it, so I'm not going to worry about it.
  2. Past few mornings I've been trying to find this carbon star with no success! I know I'm in the right area. It shouldn't be a problem with my 8" DOB should it. This is what I've been using for a reference. I will admit sometimes when I go from the viewfinder to the eyepiece my eyes get a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of stars! You know, the forest for the trees thing!
  3. Orion is well placed for me and I find myself in awe everytime I look up at it just with my eyes alone!
  4. I hadn't even thought of it that way! I'll just remember, compared to Orion's waist, I'm quite thin at 40"! 😁
  5. Very nice. If I every get to see them that nice here in Florida, we will probably have some serious problems!😁
  6. I had seen an article discussing the damage that happened, but didnt realize it would be retired!
  7. I took 1300 widefield images and got one small meteor that I think was a sporadic. And sadly, it was as dew was building up on the lens. My hand warmer I use didnt work as good as it usually did. Too old.
  8. Excellent image! I'm always amazed what the members here on the SGL are able to do!
  9. Amazing! I was out this evening and turned in that direction for a long exposure widefield. I was happy just getting it in that image! You should be tickled pink with yours!
  10. Excellent! Oh the number of worlds in that image is just beyond imagination!
  11. Early tomorrow morning will be the peak of this shower. I'll probably set up a camera again tonight if the weather permits. I can only hope to make it to '32 and hope for another storm! Good luck viewing!
  12. My grandchildren are afraid of the dark. They're 10 and 7. Have to have a very bright night light and even sleep in our room when they stay overnight. I do hope they grow out of it too. Out where I live, being outside on a dark night, with everything that's wild, can be a moving moment. Owls talking to each other, coyotes and foxes in the distance barking and howling is an incredible sound. Been many years ago, but I can remember camping and hearing a Fla panther!
  13. If I remember correctly, (without googling to be sure), we had at least 1 more moon shot already built, but scrapped it. We have a history of wasting billions of dollars on projects we start, then decide we dont need. If I could just get a job overseeing these things, think of the kit I could have if I just siphoned off .001% of a billion dollars into my offshore account!😎
  14. The one that hooked me, even though it took years to get going again was Saturn through a cheap reflector back in the late 60's. The GAE in '17 brings me to tears being I was able to share it with my youngest daughter and her son, my youngest grandson. A first total eclipse for us all. Thanks to you here on the SGL, I can add the Mercury transit and Luna occulting Mars. Two not really actual astronomy, but science/space was witnessing Apollo 11 launch at the Cape. The other is a memory that will forever be with me! I was quite casually watching the Space Shuttle Challenger lifting off in the distance through my telephoto lens, just to use up the last of the film on the roll. Just as I focused it manually, it exploded. I think I took a dozen images, the last showing contrails from the debris falling.
  15. I've marked my calendar and just hope for good skies. That time of year in Fla is pretty good, but it is falling around the same time as a meteor shower so that will bring on the clouds!😂
  16. I have the same feeling to a point. We have a local facebook group for the area I live in who opposes new construction. They want to restrict the down sizing of plots of land to keep the country, country. If it's yours do what you feel right, or need to do to care for your family. But big bright lights shining onto my property doesn't fit that thinking. There is nothing in the dark that's not there in the light, except the light.
  17. Thanks for this head up. Just the thought of Jupiter occulting Saturn leaves me imagining one incredible sight!
  18. This was an interesting article till it went political.
  19. Dont know about across the pond, but we're entering the Christmas season. Who can put the most lights on their house and in their yard. I bet for a month or two we look like a double star system from a far. 😎
  20. What was the viewing like before you removed it to clean it?
  21. Your focused might be a bit longer than mine. I also have an adapter that let's the camera fit like a normal eyepiece, but then I have to use a Barlow to move it out more. When I use that, the entire moon wont fit in the image.
