  1. Massive school boy error. Come all the way down to Exmoor for the dark skies, setup up the CG5-GT, went to plug in the power and find out I left the power lead at home.

Fair enough mate, I just know how annoying it is.

Have a lovely time down there, great part of the world.

I learnt to keep a trolly bag in effect for each scope, although one supply would do two scopes I bought 2 supplies. Means grab scope, grab bag (check bag) and everything should be in the bag but also everything is in one place for checking. Bit OTT but has made life easier.

Hope you get better skies than I did the other week. It kinda blew.

  2. Hunting around the flat looking for stuff to sell to purchase a used Celestron C8 without much joy.

Funny, you think you have plenty to sell but when it comes to it, you can never find anything.

I was having a play with the APT demo and couldn't get the hang of it so that's why I thought I would try EOS Utility. Glad I did.

    3. tingting44

      tingting44

APT really is a great program, just need to use it a couple of times to get your head around the settings and plans :)

      PatrickGilliland

Speak to Yoddha (on SGL) Ivo is the author - he was very helpful and the tool is far better than EOS utility once you have that initial learning curve complete.

  7. Just had my Telrad delivered for the C8, now lets see what all the fess is about with them.

      Phil Fargaze

A nice clear frosty night sounds good to me. Fingers crossed.

  9. The more I use my 127mak, the more I prefer it to my C8.

    1. Show previous comments  1 more
    2. hobsey

      hobsey

Yeah, the C8 is just too powerful to use in residential areas. Picks up too much turbulence.

    3. michael.h.f.wilkinson

      michael.h.f.wilkinson

Not had such problems with my C8. Gets most nighttime use.

    4. emadmoussa

      emadmoussa

I had the C11, and if anything...I doubt I'll ever go back to having a Schmidt Cassegrain without having another scope as a back-up...side by side next a refractor and a reflector, the SCT failed to achieve the same amount of contrast...it wasn't that bad on planets though.

  10. Solar filters on order. Hope I have more luck solar viewing and imaging than I do the night sky.

    1. Tums

      Tums

I've had mine for my 80ed about 2 weeks now. Haven't seen the Sun since it arrived. Good luck. lol :)

It will just be my luck that will happen to me as well.

    3. nightfisher

      nightfisher

Solar white light is pretty easy, just need some clear sunny days, a bit rare around these parts

  11. Mmmm, thinking of turning to the darkside and trading in my C8 for an imaging scope but I know I will regret it. :(

    1. Ant

      Ant

      No you won't :)

    2. ronin

      ronin

Use the C8 for planetary imaging, and see what you think.

    3. hobsey

      hobsey

C8 doesn't fit on the Star Adventurer though. Plus I also have a 127mak that I can do planetary with.

  12. Haven't had the scope out for 2 months now.

    1. tingting44

      tingting44

not long now till the dark skies return :) its a good time for doing new darks libraries and adding new kit :)

    2. hobsey

      hobsey

Been doing that. Got telrad charts printed off and laminated, going to be buying a sky atlas.

Waiting on telescope house to open back up at weekends so I can pop down there and buy, crayford focuser, 2" diagonal and 3 2" eyepieces.

Cheers Ronin, may have ago at that one.

Its got quite a detailed building guide.

    3. ronin

      ronin

Sheer chance that I had looked for mirrors for someone and that was at the end of the page, thought it looked quite nicely made. Haven't looked at the guide - OK didn't realise they had one. May go get a copy for myself then.

  14. Like the new Astropanel clear skies alert. Saying its going to be clear on Friday, lets see how accurate it is.

      tingting44

mars or saturn? whats up with the data?

    2. hobsey

      hobsey

Everything was just a bubbly mess from the heat rising from the houses and I couldn't get the focusing right. A revelation r&p is on the cards for next planetary season.

    3. jnc71106

      jnc71106

if your serious about planetary imaging then a motorised focuser is the best investment you can make

  16. Can't believe that all there is to go and look at laptops is PC World. Can't really shop around anymore.

No thanks to apple. Tesco is a good shout, won't buy on line. Prefer to be able to take it somewhere when it goes wrong.

  17. Just seen the Orion Nebula for the first time through my ST80 from a little patch of grass out the back of the flat. Well chuffed.

Nice on mate! you should mount up your c8 and zoom in on jupiter

    3. hobsey

      hobsey

I would do but the mount is all packed up in flight cases thats why I'm looking for a gab and go mount for the C8.

  18. Thats it, I'm moving abroad. I've had enough of this awful weather.

    2. hobsey

      hobsey

I don't really have the correct type of scopes for DSO.

  20. Need to move to a more astro active county, Surrey is too quiet.

    1. Fozzie

      Fozzie

Not to rub it in.... I did, thought it was lazy of me, but ive been dodging clouds all day just enjoying the sun.. looking for the best ep combo with the scope..

Defo agree, worth the money and nicely put together.

    2. hobsey

      hobsey

The film won't go to waste as I need it to make one for the finderscope.

I'm too paranoid about damaging the film.

  22. Well, what a surprise. Opposition of Saturn over the weekend and the weather is going to be seriously pants.

      hobsey
