  1. 4:30am! I've got work in the morning but just couldn't resist Jupiter, Saturn, Mars and the Moon! Great night and nothing strong coffee cannot fix :-)

I am usually asleep within seconds of my head hitting the pillow. I fave up coffee once and fell asleep at my desk - mid sentence (twice lol )

Good stuff, occasionally going sleep deprived to that extent has to be done. Just once in a while is fine, yet personally it would take me days (and nights) to recover from that episode.

  2. Transparency this evening wasn't up to much but the seeing was phenomenal. 250x on Jupiter, Saturn and Mars and still not a shimmer or wobble. Just gone 5am and I've got work in a few hours! Oh well :-)

Ay, the first week of this month wasn't much to write about but things seem to picking up again. For the first time I truly cracked Mars, not just tweaking detail but actually having them in your face. Nice night on a roof top. My girlfriend just phoned me and said I should start preparing for a dark site session tomorrow. That's a cool thumbs up :-)

      Marki

Fantastic, Rob. I've never got much useful above c. x200 with Jupiter here, and Mars is still an orange blob of various sizes for me. Hoping tonight will be better though!

Awesome seeing Qualia!-and I respect your dedication

  3. Long session this evening. Packed up at 6pm and have just arrived home at 2.30am Absoluetly exhausted but buzzing from a nice dark site session.

Sure thing. Nothing makes more exhausted than a long session...I think there's a lot of mental and visual effort involved.

Sounds brilliant, Rob! Look forward to reading your detailed report in due course! Get some sleep then tell us all about it. Great to hear other people are getting some quality scope time, even if I'm not. Keeps my enthusiasm fired :)

Thank you all for your kind comments. It's been a really sun shining day today, so I've been out all day. I would love to head out again to the dark site, but I've got work tomorrow and my boss is in hospital :-( I will try to write up a report and stuff this evening. Thank you again :-)

  4. Warm evening out, around 16ºC. Really quite peaceful sitting under the ghostly light of a passing Jupiter and Moon.

It is very windy here, so loud I have had to turn the TV up

  5. Watched the GRS and Io transit, reported back to M 82 and tried to spy out a few more fuzzies in Leo. Nice evening out.

Rpwan, just give your secondary a few jolts, remove the spider, collimate and start again, keeps you sane. Some have even resorted to putting wall paper on their dob mounts :D

  7. I think this is the worst weather I've experienced in over 2 years. We're already 12 days into the New Year. Not a single night out under the stars and I've only seen the Sun 5 times!! Absolute rubbish. Foggy all weekend and now it's tipping down :-(

Thanks for the comments, guys. Woke up early this morning and it's still raining. Oh well, I guess it's natures way of telling us to do something else in the meantime :-)

  8. If you get a chance, well worth observing the Sun today.

  9. Just a quick one to thank everyone here at SGL. I hope you all enjoy all the magic that this winter season brings x

I surely enjoy mine, it feels just a little too few sessions though

  10. Amazing dark site session tonight. Rather amusingly, however, just about everything either frooze or dewed over; my glasses, the finder, scope's shroud, eyepieces and cases, my shoes, everything :-)

Anyway, the sights last night were phenomenal. The only shame being my boots failed to keep my feet warm after a couple of hours and that with the finder all frozen up and out of action I couldn't easily star-hop.

Sounds a good time you had Qualia. I'm still waiting on a good clear night here to give my new telescope a try. Funny because we had a few good clear nights before I got the telescope lol.

      nightfisher

sounds like you had a great night, i cant remember last time i had a good session

  11. Nice session tonight with Io's transit, the Moon and a few doubles there about. But tonight for some reason I just couldn't relax. Strange things are moods. I don't even know what they really are.

  13. 72 hours of continuous rain and counting. Never seen anything like it! Only last week we were in the high sun-shining 20ºc's. Hopefully clear up in a few days but certainly winter has started with avengence.

Thanks for the funny replies. It's all gone a bit mad :-) Rain's stopped and now winds blowing around at 72km/h!

  14. Discovering something as frustrating as a cloudy night. Crystal clear nights with chronic seeing conditions. Stars looking like head lights, craters all a blur and Jupiter like a smeary blob. Not even the little 4" could win :-(

    1. cotterless45

      cotterless45

Yep, we get the very same. So clear to the eye, then wobbly wobbly fuzz !

    2. Marki

      Marki

Seems like every "clear" night for the two weeks has been like that for me...hoping we'll get some crisper nights in winter proper.

Lovely! Did you get a chance to do any sketching?

  16. Lovely session with Jupiter tonight. Caught both Ganymede's transit and the GRS. Judging by the boldness of the GRS this evening, I think we're in for a treat this winter.

  19. I managed it! Left scope to cool at 7pm. Finished the Pilar parties at 4am. Came home and enjoying the 3 Jovian Moon transit. Just gone 7am, so time for bed and then preparing a mid-day meal for the in-laws to wind up the fiestas....

  20. Thank you all for the kind comments!!! I've had a bit of bad luck and been called into to work to cover for a teacher caught up in the bomb explosion here in the city yesterday (not injured just shaken)! You have my word that the second part will be up late tonight and due thank yous and respect.
