That's a great scope (I have one myself...😆). Shame to waste it on AP! 😉

Just had my new AZ 75 mount with a Berlebach Uni 28 tripod delivered, although it doesn’t look like there are going to any clear skies this week to try it out.

Very nice. I love my AZ75 and was thinking about thr UNI18 or UNI28. What’s it like to pick up sans OTAs? Does it weigh a tonne?

The mount and tripod together weigh around 13kg and the tripod is a thing of beauty. It’s not that bad to lift really and I will be keeping it in the garage, which means I only have to carry it abut 6m anyway. I won’t cart it about with the scopes attached. I’m too clumsy for that and will most likely bash them against door frames. For moving it about the garden with the scopes attached, it might be a struggle as the combined weight is in the region of 20kg and I wouldn’t want to move it very far. I’m lucky in that I wont need to move it about once it’s set up, though.

Thanks! Did you get the 3/8” flat plate or the AZ100 plate for the tripod?

They weigh as much as you're capable of lifting comfortably with your arms slightly outstretched. Generally easy to move fully assembled if you don't have counterweights or a heavy or unwieldy payload. I wouldn't want to carry such a thing fully assembled over some distance on uneven ground or amongst a few steps.

And yeah they are a thing of beauty and genuinely put a smile on my face when unboxing my uni 4 in black.

Since you're off the wagon, look at the binocular telescope I'm selling while you're at it. If you're gonna slip down that slope, do it in style 🤩

How funny they went together - I did the same and took the other 7 & 13. Makes a nice cascade for me to partner up with my 18.2 and 3. Though it’s going be a bit longer before mine actually arrive.

My last Astro purchase of the year else I fear my family will disown me. Delivered to workplace which adds to the fun😊 This is for my Esprit 120 that I bought back in the spring so getting ready for its first light. Can’t believe how big these things are. Just to add It was from FLO's sales/Black Friday type listings so came with a welcome discount. Worthwhile having a good look through you may just find something nice  - thanks FLO as always. :)

This book and Leslie Peltier's book Guidepost to the stars started my fascination with astronomy,  I also recommend Peltiers book Starlight Nights, a great read

Since my Quark Chromosphere arrived, I added a few bits to my solar setup. A pair of Televue Plössl eyepieces arrived, one of them second hand, as well as a nice pair of William Optics binoviewers, courtesy of a gentleman on a french forum, Webastro. The binoviewers came with a 1.6x glasspath corrector, to be able to reach focus on some scopes.

Since my scope is f/5.5 or f/23 with the quark, and I'm far away from the recommended f/30, I thought I could DIY something. I found on Amazon a pair of PVC 90mm water pipe caps, in which I cut a hole of about 56mm and added 3 nylon thumb screws to hold it securely. This brings the scope down to f/30. Hopefully this will get me better views of the sun! It does increase contrast and reduce the chromatic aberrations from what I can see, so that's also convenient for looking at the Moon.

This PVC cap came in a pack of 2, so I'm thinking about making a second one with some Baader solar film instead, glued on the back maybe. The PVC is thick, about 5mm, so light doesn't get through.

I like this scope because you can remove up to 2 sections, which is a great feature for binoviewing. I found that with 1 section removed, I can reach focus with the binos and a 1.25" diagonal, even without the glasspath corrector.

How long ago was that book published? Dubhe looks like it's moved😁.

:)

1954-57 >?   Ah the nostalgia !
A young amateur astronomer was making his first observations in the nineteen fifties and was delighted to receive this book as a birthday present. He was puzzled by the 'pointers' on the cover and was convinced he had a squint because he could never get them to align like that !
Some 6+ decades later, somewhat frayed round the edges, I still have it on my bookshelf.
The book is also a little frayed :)
It is a first ed. 1954, fourth printing Sep 1957
