SGL 2022 Challenge 8 - Pick a Planet

There are plenty of planetary imaging opportunities over the next 3 months.  It will be challenging for UK imagers however owing to the low altitudes.  Therefore there will be a division based on latitude, with one overall winner regardless of latitude and an additional 1st 2nd and 3rd for entries with a latidude of 50 degrees and higher.  So please include your location when submitting an entry.  All types of image are accepted including animations and sketches.

Please include details of equipment used and other capture information.

Start date 1st August 2022

End date 31st  October 2022

As previously the winner and runners up will receive an SGL challenge mug showing their image along with a virtual medal-of-honour for their SGL signature.

Please post entries directly into this thread

To keep the thread manageable for the judges please do not post comments about entries, emoji reactions are welcome of course.

All data must be captured and processed by you (no collaborative entries). 
Data must be captured during the challenge start & end dates. 
Multiple entries are allowed but please make a fresh post within the thread.
Multiple submissions of the same image, processed differently, will not be accepted.

Saturn taken with my venerable 5 inch Meade 500 Series Apo Refractor from our Backyard in Oulton Broad Lowestoft Suffolk (Lat 52deg28min north). 3x Barlow and QHY5-ll planetary camera. Compilation of best 5000 frames from 12000.

Saturn is still low over my neighbour's roof and was subject to low altitude mirk and light  from a rising full Moon. I dug four of Saturn's moons out of a lot of 'stretched' noise so was very pleased when subsequently I checked with Stellarium and found they were in the correct locations. Data processed using PIPP, AutoStakkert3, Registax6, AffinityPhoto, FitsWork4 and DenoiseAI.  Like me all my kit is getting on a bit so I was quite pleased with the result obtained with the limited aperture of a 5 inch scope.

Here is my first attempt at planetary imaging. I used a Celestron EdgeHD 8" native 2032mm F/10 with an ASI224MC on a EQ6R mount. Had to remove my 2x Powermate as I had trouble getting alignment but now need the skies to clear again so I can try with that and get the red spot. Tried autostakkert but could not get registax to work so used Astrosurface which came out really well.

Amsterdam (50+ north), bad seeing, 16 2-minute sequences,100 fps, 2.5 ms frames, 250 gain

AZ-GTi, C6, 1.3x barlow, ASI485MC, AS!3, Registax 6, Gimp

Shot on Sept 24/25 around midnight - just missed Europa's shadow due to clouds but managed to keep Ganymede, Europa and Io visible in the processing to show Europa just clearing the western limb and Io about to go behind - with Ganymede out to the east.

Captured from near Bath, UK - latitude 51N. Skywatcher 150P on EQ3-2 (RA clock drive only). Barlow x2 and Canon 600D (astro-modded). 5 min (~6000 frames) captured using Backyard EOS (liveview x 5) at ISO800 and 1/400s shutter speed. AVI's joined with PIPP then used autostakker3 to align, stack and select best 10% for processing in Startools where I balanced colour and sharpened to produce the final image.

Jupiter 18 Sept 2022. Southampton, UK (50 45 North). 

RC 8" f/8, 2x barlow, ZWO ADC, ZWO ASI120mc-s, EQ6-R Pro. 3200mm focal length.

31 x 45s videos, av.95fps, exposure 5.9ms, gain 100%. Each video stacked, sharpened, derotated and further sharpened. Firecapture, PIPP, AS3, Winjupos. Total frames stacked 27329 out of 130840.

 Captured on 27th September 2022 from Birmingham UK. (52.432410, -1.832460)

First ever attempt at imaging Jupiter.
Skywatcher 200PDS, Astro Essentials 1.25" 2x Barlow, ASI224MC.
Manual Guiding, captured using Firecapture (over the course of 5mins) and then Stacked/processed in AutoStakkert (40% of 20,000 frames captured) and Registax

Jupiter, GRS and Calisto. 29 Sept 2022. Southampton, UK (50 45 North). 

200mm RC8" f/8, 2x barlow, ZWO ADC, ZWO ASI120mc-s, EQ6-R Pro. 3200mm focal length. 

10 x 60s videos at 84fps, gain 100%, exposure 11.88ms. Each video stacked, sharpened and de-rotated, with final bit of sharpening. Firecapture, PIPP, AS3, Winjupos. Total 11430 out of 49283 frames stacked.

I really wish I had the equipment that some of these guys have, but I have to make do with my cheap setup! This is my attempt at Jupiter with Callisto in frame too. This is using a Skywatcher 150p and ZWO290MC

Winjupos 6-minute video de rotation. Registax. Image Analyzer AS/3. Astrosuface. 

Suffolk UK. Moon IO with dark poles showing a colour difference.  And shadow.

Jupiter from Taunton UK on 8th October (I’m at exactly 51 degrees latitude, and I do mean exactly… my observing spot is 51  00’ 00”)

SW300p on AZEQ6. ASI485mc. Baader Q barlow and ZWO ADC. 18x 90sec captures.

Animation of Jupiter GRS transit on 6 Oct 2022, from Norfolk UK, latitude 52° 30' 27". C14, ASI462MC. Total of 16 x 6min SERs captured at 8ms/125fps. Processed through PIPP, WinJupos, AS3!, Registax6, Affinity Photo. Annimation comprises 92,000 frames (best 6000 per SER) from nearly 3/4 million frames captured over 2.5 hours elapsed time.

Saturn and 5 moons four days after opposition: the bright ones from the left are Rhea, Tethys and Dione. Just above the right-hand arc of the rings is Enceladus, then very dim but just visible at the right-most tip of the rings is Mimas.  This was created by combining two separate images, all done with thanks to assistant astronomer Ditto @blooddee. Location: Tanjung Lesung, Indonesia at 6.5 deg S.

Equipment: William Optics FLT 156 with Televue 4x Powermate and ZW0 ASI462MC camera. Best of 6000 frames processed with PIPP, AutoStakkert3 and RegiStax6.

Saturn by itself is so stunning, taken 4 days past opposition from Tanjung Lesung, Indonesia at 6.5 deg S. So telescope almost vertical, but here we have to deal with tropical haze and endless clouds..!!

Equipment: William Optics FLT 156 with Televue 4x Powermate and ZW0 ASI462MC camera. Best of 4000 frames processed with PIPP, AutoStakkert3 and RegiStax6.

Jupiter at opposition on 26 September taken from Tanjung Lesung, Indonesia at 6.5 deg S. The jump in the animation was during the meridian flip with the camera in danger of hitting the tri-pier legs and the telescope almost vertical. It was very windy, otherwise the images could have been a lot better. 

Io starting on the right and disappearing, then Europa appearing on the left. Wonderful...!!!

Equipment: William Optics FLT 156 with Televue 4x Powermate and ZW0 ASI462MC camera. Best of 4000 frames processed for each image with PIPP, AutoStakkert3 and RegiStax6.

Jupiter with GRS captured from Delhi Skies using 8" Skywatcher Flextube Dobsonian on an EQ platform (one stepper motor) everything else is done manually, ZWO ASI178MC camera, Televue 2.5X Powermate, SvBony UV/IR Filter.

Captured in Sharpcap, AVI file Gain 322 Exposure Exposure=4.2830ms, stacked 55% of 13664 frames at 151FPS.
