Indeed Cath I really didnt realise you get such a full image of the Horsehead with just a 400mm lens. Makes me even more excited about getting a Astrotrac in the new year and getting 400mL out.

Astonishing! I didn't realise such a level of perfection was possible with a DSLR. Did you use any kind of luminance layer? The picture looks brilliant! And as someone said, you didn't even use a telescope!

Fully inspired after seeing such a wonderful image, I had a look at the price of a Canon 400mm f5.6L. That will set you back about £900 so I wouldn't call it 'a simple lens' after that!

Wow! I wish my horsehead image looked half as good as this! Very smooth and detailed with lovely colour! I can't imagine how good it would have been if you weren't clouded out:)

It was a satellite I think. If they are not too bad I don't bother removing them.

Indeed, luckily i managed to pick up mine for a steal at £700 shipped from Hong Kong and they even paid the import tax. Now that was when ebay was still a place for sane people.

How would you find the Horsehead Nebula in a reflecting telescope?

It's just below the left hand belt star (the brightest star in the above images). But don't bother wasting your time since at least a 16" scope is needed to barely detect it visually. Not knowing this, I spent many years trying to view it with a 250mm reflector on very dark, transparent nights and failed I think they should have named it the "seahorse nebula"
