Hello,

I've just joined primarily to ask a question about recommended telescopes for a child (see post in equipment area) but it's lead to my spending lots of time reviving my old interest in astronomy. Whether or not I actively revive that interest is a different question altogether, too many other demands on my time might make buying a good telescope a futile puchase.

Background is that I used to do a lot of astronomy when I was a child with a cheap and, in retrospect, horrible small newtonian. Then I read Astrophysics at University, was spoiled with access to some really good kit which was way beyond the reach of amateurs at the time and so never got back into astronomy after that. Having had a 16" cassegrain in a real observatory to play with not to mention spectroscopes to do some real work going back to a small scope to look at craters on the moon would have seemed to much of a comedown.

If I was to get back into it now I'd probably want to get in imaging which was never a practical option as an amateur when I started (could never be botherd with all the film) or even spectroscopy if possible as that would let me play with some 'real' science. But for the moment the interest is knowledgable if passive.

Welcome to the SGL. Your education banground sounds quite similar to mine and I know what you mean about the difficulty of going back after having access to rather impressive kit at Uni. However, if you do find the time and desire, that equipment is now readily available to the wider astronomical community.

Clear skies, and good luck with the new entry scope.

Hi and welcome to the Lounge, JnB!

You might be interested in perusing the Radioastronomy and Spectroscopy sub-forum near the bottom of the main page - I'm so impressed by what those guys and gals can do with amateur equipment. And the results digital imagers can achieve these days is phenomenal! Hope your rekindled interest leads you to interesting places!

hi welcome to sgl. Joining a stargazing society will often give you access to large powerful scopes. The society i am in has access to a 16 inch mead scope completely computer controlled. I am also into astrophotography and i find part of the fun is getting good images with modest equipment. Good luck.

John
