  1. Very interesting, thanks for taking the time to put this together. I’m familiar with the functions and limitations of Cat-5, but never really had an opportunity to get to grips with fibre.
  2. I have a similar problem. My street light is also at the NW corner. The only real difference in my layout is that my roof rolls away from the light. I have some plywood panels that I fix to the walls of the shed once the roof is rolled off. I made slots out of 2x1 battens to fit them into. They interlock to give a bit more stability. They are a bit problematic with even just a little breeze. It’s not a perfect solution but it is at least usable. There is some more information here: https://www.backyardastro.org/topic/2163-my-observatory/ Edit: not sure you’ll be able to follow that link. I’m away at the moment, will give some more info when I get back if you want.
  3. I’ve just gone through this as well, following laptop failure. I went with a mini pc for my observatory (shed) rather than another laptop as it was cheaper and certainly meets my needs. I set as much software as I could with the pc running in the house, and then used ASCOM simulators to test as much as I could. There’s a very useful YouTube video that explains how to set this up. The focus is on learning to use various packages, but it works just as well as learning to use simulators to test software. The internet connection to my obsy runs over mains cables, you don’t say whether you have mains power at your setup, but it’s worth looking at if you do. Then again, whilst I can see the disadvantages of using a long Ethernet cable, it would at least give you a temporary solution whilst you get everything set up and working, especially if you can borrow one.
  4. I now have an Extension insalled on my pier, was very straightforward to fit and seems to be stable. Picture below in case anyone is curious or thinking of doing the same.
  5. Just wanted to mention the folks at Tring Astronomy Centre, who have recently supplied me with an Altair Astro 8# Pier and a Skywatcher EQ6 Extension. Both very efficiently processed and delivered, and the Extension actually arrived overnight despite being listed as 3-5 Days Delivery. Nice to be able to drop in to the showroom for a chat as well!
  6. Thanks! I'll be less agressive with my tightening when I do this install
  7. Interesting, yes, I understand how it works. However I'm in the practice of slackening off the central bolt slightly before making the Latitude adjustment. Is that not necessary? Or do you just leave the central bolt slightly loose anyway? I found that if I didn't slacken that bolt I couldn't get latitude movement. Perhaps I had it too tight.
  8. I'm looking to get one of these as a pier extension. Thing that concerns me is, doesn't it stop you from using the latitude adjustment bolts on the NEQ6? Because once installed you can't get at the bolt securing the mount to free it off? So presumably you'd need to free off the bottom bolt and rotate the whole assembly by hand. Dave
