Hi Bob and welcome to SGL, if you have a pair of binoculars, go to our Bins Section, under observing links you will find bin friendly sky charts called TUBA, Turing the Universe with Binoculars, maps you can down load and print of whatever part of the sky you want to observe, if you have transport, I am sure it will not be far to some darker sites, along the coast or inland, with a red torch and the maps you can start to learn your way about the night sky
