Old newbie

hi all,iam from the highlands got given a celestron 31040 they were going to skip it. its working ok, lenses are ok thats all i know about it, what else will i need to look into the night sky thanks.

Hi, Alnessman, and welcome to the forum.

That is a reasonable starter scope (especially as a freebie). Apart from the clear skies already mentioned, you may find a (free) program called Stellarium useful to see what is going to be worth looking at on a particular night. FWIW, I would advise you not to go spending too much at this stage, get used to using what you have, then when you know what you want (and more importantly why you want it) that is the time to start spending.

Also, keep an eye out for any 'local meets' with other astronomers ... a great way to start finding your way around the heavens.
