Heavens. Thanks all for your replies. I've actually been out spending money on a new telescope today - a Celestron Nexstar 127SLT. Predictably, since I've got it home the clouds have come in so I suspect that it's not going to get used tonight!

Anyway, I have loads of questions to ask but I'll deal with those in the relevant sections. Thanks again for the friendly welcome.
