  1. I had an uncle in the 60's who had one. He liked taking it out when us kids was around. I'm not sure if it was the glass eye that always got me, or the empty eye socket? He was a peculiar character!
  2. So sorry for your loss. It's so hard when we lose one of our furry family members.
  3. It's the incredible talented people here who are so willing to help newcomers learn about this wonderful hobby that make the SGL work and last. The short time I've been allowed to associate with you I've come to realize regardless of where we call home, we all have so many things in common!
  4. With me partially retired, I'm lucky to have 4 days a week to try and observe. It helps that my work shift is 4am to 1pm so on my days off my internal clock always goes off at 2am. Everyone laughs though at me being able to go to bed at 6:30 PM with almost 2 hours till sun set. I just close my eyes and go to sleep.
  5. The images are all spectacular! Today I'm finishing my second week of four days off and every day has had the sky filled with clouds. I'll just have to show this comet and be here smiling when it comes back!! 😉
  6. So, I understand the principle of a 2x barlow takes a 20mm eyepiece and basically makes a 10 out of it. What does stacking barlows together do? I have a good 3x and a cheap 2x. I can see the change with the two combined but was wondering how the actual figures work out.
  7. Thanks for posting the images! I'm still struggling with evening clouds. Starting to wonder if I'll get a good go at it before it changes more.
  8. With me working Monday, I didnt realize SpaceX had another launch, a South Military satellite. But in their tradition of being on the cutting edge, they managed a booster turn around in 51 days. The one used was the one that put our astronauts back in space. Then they managed to catch both nose cone fairings parachuting back before they went into the water. I'm pretty sure I've read they cost 6 million for the pair. I've said it before. If we would have had this mentality all along, what would we have accomplished by now?
  9. Yes, but it's in several images and it doesn't stay at that angle. It rotates with the stars. In another image, its higher in the image and almost straight across it.
  10. I like Scorpios, it's my birth sign. This is an old image from earlier this year. Scorpios is visible in it along with some of the Milkway, Jupiter, Saturn and perhaps Mars. Never was able to figure out what caused the line across the image. It's in several images and moves almost like it's in space.
  11. Well, except for the shipping box, this crazy old man fits in perfectly with this group! And thank you for accepting me the way I am!
  12. As I'm typing this I'm hoping you all realize how fond I have grown of your wisdom and E. friendship. But the idea of having a shipping package ten years old along with sitting in frigid temps for hours to watch something the size of this . move through the eyepiece borders very heavily on OCD! God! What am I part of??
  13. Patience! They're not going anywhere for a little while!😁
  14. Was reading on the internet today about how this comet has everyone excited. From what I saw, the powers to be in the scientific world are considering bestowing the title "The Great" to it! Be cool to know we witnessed The Great Comet of 2020, wouldn't it!! When was the last one?
  15. Not sure your location. I'm in Florida and lucky for me the path the planets follow across the sky, the ecliptic, is quite high above the Southern horizon. Here if you look South about 5am, Jupiter and Saturn will be to your right, slowly setting in the West. Jupiter is very brilliant, one of the brightest things in the sky. Above it to its and your left, Saturn is much dimmer, but still easily seen. Mars is almost straight ahead of you, at the zenith, following the ecliptic. It is also very bright and looks redish. Down close to the Eastern horizon will be Venus, which is normally the third brightest thing in the sky after the Sun and then the Moon. They are all quite easily seen with just your eyes.
  16. I should have set my calendar to remind me last year! I wish you clears skies for your birthday Gina.
  17. Yes, black and white with so much "snow" I thought I lived in the arctic, not Florida! Oh how things have changed! To think how clearly we can see images now from the orbiters all the way out to Pluto! But, Juno and Cassini would have to be my favorites!
  18. I'm always amazed with images like this. Incredible.
  19. I have started my 3 day work week this morning, but being I go to bed at 7pm on the nights before, that shot last night in the foot! And of course at 9pm, when I answered an unusual nature call, it looked clear outside!! My next real chance will be Tuesday evening.
  20. So, when Neowise made it around the sun, being visible in the mornings, we had an unusual opposite weather pattern. The winds came in off the Gulf, giving us morning clouds and showers. Now, when it goes to being an early evening sight, our weather goes back to normal with Easterly winds, thunderstorms and heavy rain just before sunset. It takes till almost midnight for the clouds to clear! If this doesn't change, I'll only have viewed it once and that was with binos! I wish I had a clue to what I did to someone in a previous life.
  21. I post images on a local FaceBook page where I live. Who knows, maybe if I can get interest up, people will turn off some lights. One person asked about the very bright star with a smaller one near it, so I took this to show her what she was really seeing in the sky. Blew the moon and Venus out to get the stars!
  22. Welcome, I'm your Southern neighbor in central Florida. Have my ties to Missouri though, married a girl from near St. Louis. Her sister in law still lives near Warsaw.
  23. Mercury stayed hidden for me as well. And sadly I'm beginning to think my eyes just aren't good enough to pick Uranus and Neptune out, unless they are very close to something I can find easy, like when Neptune was close to Mars. The crescent moon with the Earthshine was very nice!
