My long sighted glasses make things slightly bigger, but I still have worse eyesight than my brother with 20/20 vision even with glasses on >:(

I thought you were trolling at first mate :P

      gooseholla

This is what I am thinking, surely it isn't naked eye anymore but a slight, in theory, advantage and magnification?

  3. Seeing was rubbish on Mars so applied to uni instead.

      gooseholla

Indeed it does. I did some OU stuff a few years back. Was so nice to be able to do more or less when I wanted.

  4. Been out buying winter observing gear.

Its mad, when I was 20 I'd work out in the snow in a t-shirt. Now 10 years on, the slightest chill in the air and I'm under a cover on the sofa! Cold definitely gets me when observing nowadays.

    3. Mike73

      Mike73

Money well spent I reckon. I'm the same even this time of year I wear full on winter kit. Better too hot than cold and being uncomfortable!

    4. gooseholla

      gooseholla

Went out In my two fleeces tonight. Didn't feel cold. Moment I took them off in the house realised how cold it was! Best £28 spent I think.

  5. Telescope nearly in perfect collimation. Must resist urge for new eyepieces.

      Stargazer33

Sounds like you had a good night. Wish our streetlights went off at midnight. People round here get scared if one bulb goes out!

    4. gooseholla

      gooseholla

Yeah was good. I wish security lights would go out round here! But yeah, tis nice to have the street lights go off.

  7. For a brief moment of clear, I saw the Veil Nebula from my garden! Wooo

      jabeoo1

Congratulations on seeing it, I have yet to spy this massive expanse. I have an OIII filter coming so hopefully start viewing this as a regular target. There is an amazing image if you simply search 'veil in UV'. It looks like a skull with a star in one socket. Unreal :)

    3. gooseholla

      gooseholla

Went back and saw some more of it tonight. It is such an amazing sight!

    4. jabeoo1

      jabeoo1

I located the area with my widest field EP & with no access to the OIII stared at the black absence of the veil. The LP here washed out much of the sky so concentrated on some doubles.

OIII should be here today (yay!).

      hobsey

Nope, I wouldn't be silly enough to sell it.

    4. gooseholla

      gooseholla

Yup it was a bargain, but only because i purchased a £200 telescope 2 years ago :D

  9. Does anyone else have problem posting new topics? Mine always goes to a connection reset error and never posts?

    1. Grant

      Grant

No other reports of this and plenty of topics getting posted - what area where you trying to post in? Can you try and post a topic in the bugs forum and see if that works?

    2. gooseholla

      gooseholla

It is any area in chrome or IE. Been going on since I returned to this site a week or so ago. I'll try and post in a bit.

    3. gooseholla

      BenDavis

Ok cool I will have a look, thanks

  13. Looking at a clear night with Moon in view for hours makes me realise how little I've looked at it over the years, and how little I can identify on it.

    1. ronin

      ronin

I guess too many of us dismiss it. That includes me, I can get as far as 1) that is the moon, and, 2) Tycho.

    2. gooseholla

      gooseholla

Don't get me wrong, I love the moon once I'm looking at it. Got some good rough sketches of craters tonight and learned my way around some more... it is just getting motivated to look at the moon - I guess I am lazy and my mind tells me: seen one crater, seen them all.

    3. jabeoo1

      jabeoo1

Ronin thats not bad really. Now for #3) Birt & Birt A & Straight wall.

      Although #1 & 2 are really good.

      Stargazer33

I'm sure you will be fine once you get started. Wish I could do something like that, but just haven't got the time.

  15. Great... rain is forecaseted here through next weekend! So much for Virgo/Coma galaxies!

    1. ronin

      ronin

I have the idea, based on little that I can give as 100% proof, that when it has stopped raining they will still be there and not look a lot different.

    2. gooseholla

      gooseholla

Except that by 2 weeks time they be behind the trees of neighbours garden so gone from my sight for another year.

    3. ronin

      ronin

So it is either clouds or trees. At this exact time I have thunderstorms. I gave up observing from home, I now simply go elsewhere to one of the places I know of. Cannot see keyboard to type - VERY VERY dark all of a sudden. Off to build an Ark.

  16. Telrad = one of the best things you can get for a telescope. Can't believe how easily and quickly I am hunting down objects.

    1. Daniel-K

      Daniel-K

Telread+28mm finder EP = lots of objects in one night :)

    2. gooseholla

      gooseholla

That it surely does! Although in my case it is a 20mm eyepiece. I have a panaview 26 or 28mm, but it rarely sees the light. Poor little eyepiece.

    3. cotterless45

      cotterless45

Superb, don't leave it on for a week !doooh!

  17. Clear skies tonight. That will be the 6th night out in 10 or 11 days. Not bad!

    1. tingting44

      tingting44

sounds awsome! with work and the moon i only get maybe a chance of 2 nights out of a month to image lately if im lucky :(

    2. gooseholla

      gooseholla

Yeah I was like that when I worked, but a situation has allowed me to take a few months off, so I can view this autumn and winter!

  18. Just got to get through a wedding tomorrow then hopefully I can finish my scope Tuesday and Wednesday!

    1. faulksy

      faulksy

what do you mean finish your scope. what are you building. please tell

    2. gooseholla

      gooseholla

I've been building an 18" truss dobsonian, in the style of Obsession.

  19. Big Scopes are worth every penny :D :D :D!! So is John Nichol! What a mirror, what a night!

    1. ronin

      ronin

      Good night, I assume ?

    2. gooseholla

      gooseholla

Well, good two hours!!! FIrst time I tried the mirror out on DSOs and well, if M3 is an indication of what Is to come, then WOW!

  20. New Telrad glass is here. Not cheap, but had to be done!

    1. Daniel-K

      Daniel-K

Was it not cheaper buying a 2nd hand telrAd

    2. gooseholla

      gooseholla

Nope! Glass was £8 or £9, but meh, the telrad didn't cost me anything to start with, so still up.

  21. Think I've just purchased an ES 20mm 100 degree EP for less than £200. Even with customs added that is going to be a bargain.

    1. estwing
    2. gooseholla

      gooseholla

With a good barlow it has the power to replace all my current eyepieces bar 5 and 6 mm... Hopefully a. I've actually got the eyepiece and b. it works well in my scope

  22. Woohoo ES 20mm 100 degree on its way for Wednesday delivery!

    1. Lorne

      Lorne

Had a look through a mate's 20mm... stunning views, you will love this EP. I'm seriously tempted to get one to replace my 28mm Nirvana.

    2. gooseholla

      gooseholla

I'll leave it even more as it was 250 euro posted! That came to £193...
