Hi,

I have started recently to point my camera to the night sky (Pentax K-30 with a 55-300mm zoom). I also had a telescope of some sort since I was a teenager (long time ago :-). I am playing with the idea to get more serious in the future and have spend some time on this forum. I am also sure that I will have questions later on, so I thought I better join...

To give you an idea how far I am getting without a telescope I attached a picture of the lagoon and trifid nebulas which happen to be right on top of us at the moment. By the way, not all my attempts are that good.

Cheers

hjw

Hi HJW and welcome to SGL. If you are into DIY and want to expand on your camera night photography, then have a look at the Barn Door projects, originally initiated by Dave trot. There are many simple expansions on the idea, that will track stars to avoid trailing for reasonable amounts of time, enjoy :)

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!

@sara (swag72) I am honoured by your comment: "From one imager to another..." I went on you website - very impressive and I am definitely out of my league. I also saw that your first mount was the HEQ5 Pro. Looking at peoples signatures the NEQ6 seems to be more popular. I was thinking about getting a mount for Christmas/early next year and was also considering the HEQ5. I can't see that I can justify the NEQ6. Would the HEQ5 be suitable for imaging with let's say the SW ED100 and a DSLR?

Cheers

Hi HJW and welcome to SGL, from another Aussie (now in the uk). Certainly spoilt for skies down your way if you can get a bit out of Melbourne. Of course NSW skies will always be better...I guess thats why The swannies do so well in night games. (and with a bit of luck, the grandfinal this week-end).Hope you're not in Hawthorn ;).

Thanks Ken,

Really dark skys sound tempting and I might take up your offer once I get some gear. I actually live in the Dandenong Ranges, so it's the "wrong" side of town.

Also a BIG "Thanks" to the rest of the SGL for providing such a warm welcome!
