Hi Mark and welcome to the forum.

You could ask the person who purchased your present to take the clouds back and get a refund (was going to say...."or get a rain cheque" but the mods here on the forum would have had me shot before dawn :() Welcome to astronomy!! If its not a purchase, the other threat to those clear nights are family (must go) anniversaries etc, they NEVER fall on a rainy, foggy or cloudy night.

Right that's got it out of my system, feel better now. One of the best reasons for joining the forum, we know how you feel and we can keep you going!

Hi Mark and welcome to SGL

If your scope is on an equatorial mount then the best initial suggestion is to learn how to "polar align" it. It may seem hard at first but once you realise what's going on you'll reap the benefits. It makes pointing, tracking, and viewing much easier :)
