Hi all,

Having retired I have decided to get back into stargazing!

I had a small scope when I was in my early teens, can’t remember what make but it died in the end and never got replaced.

I have spent quite a lot of time researching which scope to buy – by reading various mags and looking at the excellent advice being offered on these forums. I have finally come down to two scopes, both from SW. One being the Explorer 150P EQ3-2 / EQ-3 and the other being the Skyliner 200P Dobsonian. Both scopes have their pros and cons, but sit nicely within the planned budget.

All I have to do now is to make a final decision!!

I might be a little worried about the stability of the 150P on the EQ3-2 so I'd probably go for the 200P dob, but I'm sure you'll enjoy whichever you choose. If there's a local club it might be worth getting along to see if anyone has either. There's no substitute for seeing something in the flesh.

If its purely visual I would also say the dob. I would not fancy the 150 on an EQ3-2 mount.

I'd go for the 200P. You can always get a suitable equatorial mount at a later date if you want to track objects.

When it comes to scopes, I'd go for aperture everytime. A 200 will allow you to see fine planetary detail as well as some brighter deep sky objects.

My opinion for what its worth, get the biggest scope you can get and that way you will not spend twice. 200P Dob would be my choice for visual and if your going to buy a 8 inch you may as well just get the 10inch
