Hi Bowdie and welcome to the forum. Not a bad idea to read first before buying but as an addition to your research, can I recommend that you download some planetarium software called "Stellarium" from here. Its free, easy to use and will help you identify what you can see in the night sky when you finally get that scope. Good of learning the constellations, has plenty of 'toys' to play with including an advance date/time facility to help you plan your observing session when choosing objects from your new book.
