I'm a fan of Luminos. Although it doesn't seem to get mentioned as often as one others, I find it very clear and intuitive to use, and it really comes into its own on the bigger screen of the iPad. There has been a recent update which integrates some images of DSOs and this doesn't appear to be completely successful in my opinion  - otherwise great. You can track what you have seen and find objects easily. I've used it a lot in the past few months to locate Lovejoy Q2 for example. I only wish they did a version for the Mac OS.

Sky Safari 4+ for me, you can add your own landscapes as well. This is the Rollrights Stones where the Chipping Norton Group observe from (iPad version but it's the same for iphone)

Skysafari and Mobile Observatory have been recommended to me but before buying anything I have tried some free ones.

Google Sky Map is good just point your phone / pad at the sky to ID what's up. (I prefer to avoid MS and Google normally!)

Heavens above is useful, listing nightly events and many satellite tracks but a basic sky map.

Night Sky tools is also useful but almost has too much information for a beginner.  It does have a good moon map, details of meteor showers and much more. Plus it has calculators for AP exposure times, telescope magnification and resolving power and many more.

My current favorite though is ISS detector, great for ISS and Iridium - has a compass and elevation meter which is great for a beginner like me.
