Hi Danielle! Welcome to SGL. I was new to all of this a few months ago. If you've got a question to ask, somebody here will have the answer! It's a friendly place. I'm in the cloud club too! Got a very mobile setup sat waiting at the back door for a gap in the clouds. Hope you enjoy your scope.

Hi Danielle and welcome to the forum. Congratulations on getting your new scope but what a shame about the weather. One way to help you keep focussed during bad weather is perhaps to download some free planetarium software called "Stellarium" which you can read more about here. It's really easy to use and will certainly help you get started by allowing you to practice knowing which constellation are which and also where to find some interesting objects, be they deep sky or planets etc. The sky Stellarium simulates for you can be matched to the exact view of the night sky you see form your own viewing site (e.g garden) and the co-ordinates that are required can be easily found by locating your viewing site on google earth. This software can also help you identify what you are looking at and there is a great advance date/time feature that will let you know what is coming in the night sky and when it will be in view - really handy if your view is partly blocked by nearby buildings or trees etc.

Wishing you clear skies soon and hope you enjoy the forum.

Hi Danielle,

Welcome to the forum from me to - Don't despair as the met say the weather should clear for January 1st. You've got some great dark sky locations around the northern part of Salisbury Plain and should get some excellent views once the weather has cleared.

Perhaps some good time to get familiar with the scope, always worth getting it outside if the rain stops just to get the finder scope aligned. Also well worth downloading a copy of Stellarium and setup your location for a view of what you might see when the clouds part.

Good luck and clear skies - Jake
