Yes am also new here, always been interested in the stars but never took it up as a hobby, asked for an astronomy book for christmas and hope to get it into it more.

Books are a great start, binos will further help put some of your reading into practice. This time of year is great for looking up local astro clubs/observing groups for their timetables on free public viewing sessions. This will give you an idea how good objects can really look and also give you an understanding of the type of gear used etc.
