NAN & Pelican from Salisbury

Starflyer

Recommended Posts

Here's a rough of some of my data from this year's Salisbury Star Party, I've got about 12 hours of data to go through but couldn't resist posting this one :)

A 2 pane mosaic of NGC7000 & IC5070 taken with a WO ZS80FD and cooled / modified Canon 450D.

Thanks Rob, it was good to see the three of you again :)

Thanks Toby, I built the cooler using Gary Honis's tutorial from here. With the camera running I'm only seeing about a 20C drop in temperature using a 45w peltier element. I think there're three reasons for this; the aluminium sheet I used was quite thick compared to Gary's (1.1mm), it was a cheep, impure grade and I managed to slightly warp the face where the peltier contacts the box. A mark II box is on the horizon now I've seen the massive difference in noise that a 15-20C drop makes :)

Thanks for all the kind comments, the cooler has made a huge difference, these are only 11 x 7mins for the NAN and 16 x x 7mins for the Pelican. I matched the temperature of the darks with the lights and used a decent number of darks; I took a load of them over the two cloudy nights.

There's a great tool that shows the internal (some people have said the Digic processor) temp that's recorded in the exif data. I got a shock when I looked back and some of my cold night images had internal temps of ~28C. These images were all 8-11C and the difference in noise is massive. Kuso Exif Viewer

Does anyone know of a fairly simple (free if poss) piece of software for analysing noise levels in darks?

Thanks for the tip Peter, I pushed the output on the red to 16, any more and it looked flooded with red, it does look much better though :)

Thanks Olly, I prefer a less red background too, the lovely rich starfield seems to stand out better :)

I didn't take any pics Toby, I pretty much followed Gary's build but used a peltier bought off eBay and a heatsink/fan that I had lying around. If you decide to have a go and get stuck just shout by PM and I'll let you know how I did the bit of it that you're stuck on. I'll probably build a mk2 version and I'll try and fully document that one :hello2:

Here's the final version and 50% version / 100% version - please be aware that the big ones are fairly large file sizes.

I imaged on six nights James, that's why I probably appeared half dead whenever I saw you :)

I had to ditch a good few hours worth when the reducer dewed over from the contact with the cold box and I was socialising to much to notice :hello2: A 2" dew strap sorted that out for the following nights though :)
