Just signed up. Been watching the stars since the Moon Landings.

I had a couple of scopes before, but those were the kind of thing you buy for your kid. HAHAHA

Now I think I'm ready for something MUCH Better.

Looking at a Celestron Nexstar 8se.

Welcome aboard.

I should warn you, though, that we experience occasional outbreaks of sanity.

Welcome to SGL, we are a friendly lot, but please do remember we’re in the UK, so some meanings may differ.

Celestron Nexstar 8SE

I plan to use this following setup.

Celestron NexStar 8SE

2012 13” MacBookPro running Win 10 from BootCamp

Olympus OM-D E-M10 Mark III

iPad mini 6th Gen for remote control of the Olympus.

I also have a 2024 16” MacBookAir M3 that I plan to use later to capture and process the images.

Any suggestions, comments, or help would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome. As someone very new to SGL I hope you find the site as welcoming and helpful as it has been for me.

Just remember, if you store your eyepieces in a waist pouch for easy access while observing, it's called a bum bag on here.  Don't even think about calling it a fa**y pack on here.  It's a really weird UK-US English difference that I just don't get. :icon_scratch:

Welcome to SGL from a fellow Texan living in Graham.  I guess you could say I am just an old "Graham cracker"  8^)

SGL is a great place to spend time when the clouds are about.   BTW......Ancestry says I am 47% Scot, 33% English with a bit of Wales mixed in

Hi, SR, and welcome to the forum.

When you get around to imaging, be aware that the SE mount is limited. As an alt-az mount (it moves up/down & left/right instead of just moving on one axis tilted twoards the pole) you will get what is called field rotation - when you line up the frames each one will be at an angle to the previous and next one. You will therefore find yourself cropping the final result. This is fine when the time between the first 'sub' and the last is not too long. But if you ar ebitten by the astrophotography bug (aka 'the dark side'!) you will soon find yourself spending lots of money on a nice new mount ...

Thanks.

Welcome Sky Raider - I've been here for less time than you (perhaps 10 days or so)!

I know Houston a little though. I worked in the Energy Corridor for a couple of months way back in 2012. Loved it there. I was sorry to have to leave.

I've no idea what sky watching is like there though. (I didn't kick off this hobby seriously until a about three or four years ago).

The forum's been great so far. You can find the answers to things that it's really hard to discover any other way!
