Hi everyone! I would just quickly like to ask people for any suggestions for targets to observe, as i would really like to know your faves are. Also, i'd like to ask, what's all this 'reputation' stuff about. Apparently at the moment i'm a Nebula.

Depends on your viewing skies light pollution and horizon. M42 is nice this time of the year, pleiades, M31 (but not much detail to it), open clusters such as M35, M44 and many many more. If you have dark skies, then nebulas are worth going after such as Eskimo, M1, M1 (Crab nebula), Owl nebula and more. Worth buying Turn Left at Orion. Apps such as Stellarium or sky safari. Happy viewing.

Another vote for Turn Left at Orion. I also have a copy of the Cambridge Star Atlas by Wil Tirion, as I like to have a paper reference to read/look at.

Skies are seasonal, obviously, so I'm currently making the most of what's visible in the south - Orion, Canis Major, Auriga, Gemini,  Lepus etc.

Hiya,

I found it useful to work my way through the Messier list one constellation at a time, and printed  out a chart and kept it in my notebook. After about a year or so I had most of them ticked 🙂. Did the same with the Caldwell catalog ...

I have a Top Objects list  spreadsheet containing different sheets and containing object location, information and description. I add a "T" for objects I want to target and then add a date and score (1-5) when they've been observed.

The sources are recommendations on the astronomy websites and forums like this plus Turn Left at Orion.

The sheets are grouped as...

Lunar

Binaries (I posted this sheet earlier - https://astro.catshill.com/top-500-binary-stars

DSOs (rated by difficulty)

Solar System

Other - for anything that doesn't come under the above.

The header ('nebula'  , 'star forming' etc) relates to your number of posts, the 'reputation' is the number of likes etc , i.e. positive reactions your posts have had.

Lists of possible targets, all PDFs so you can download and use offline, or print any you wish :

The Moore Winter marathon, and old but decent list, first 25 best in binoculars, second set for 'scopes. Ignore the planetary info, it is specific to the year of publication

Caldwell (about half are southern hemisphere, so not relevant for you, at least at the mo. !)

and what amounts to a free book

Looks some nice ones there, some more for me to have a look through.  That's something nice about this forum, someone asks a question and it's a flash of inspiration for others!

Here's another one I'm going through at the moment, it's and observation list from 2003 but thought out for light polluted areas https://skyandtelescope.org/wp-content/uploads/MullaneyDeepSky111.pdf

I wonder what we will fill up with junk first. The oceans or the atmosphere?

I thought we'd already achieved the oceans being full of junk? Hopefully, the Kessler effect will kick in and all that junk up there burns up. It'll serve them right for allowing such madness. I wasn't aware of this, thanks for raising it.
