Hello guys, I am from Selangor in Malaysia (3.519863 , 101.538116) and I am totally new in stargazing, I am wondering if anyone could introduce me a few ebooks to get started in stargazing (probably on how to read star chart, what is constellation all this basic stuffs)

Also, Malaysia is located near the equator, I am wondering what are the main differences of stargazing in Malaysia compare with Northern hemisphere and Southern Hemisphere areas.

Thank you.

Kind regards,

Sky.

Welcome to SGL.

You are in a fairly unique area with views into both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere's. Most of just get familiar with one.

Have a look at Turn Left at Orion. A good book which covers both North & South and has drawings rather than high res images of what you can actually see through binoculars, a small refractor and a medium sized reflector. It shows how to star hop to find the objects.

The Philips astronomy series books are good value too. http://www.philipsastronomy.com/

Magazines like Sky At Night and Sky & Telescope also have free to access online info.

Malaysia is quite blessed when it comes to stargazing in Nov-Feb. On my last trip there (Ipoh), I was quite surprised to find Orion almost directly overhead - which would make a fantastic imaging or observing opportunity.... its just shame I didnt have my telescope with me!

Also, take a moment to download and install Stellarium - its a great way to learn what is where, or plan your sessions:

http://www.stellarium.org/

Just enter your location, and it will show you what is the sky for where you live. It's quite likely I will be going back there next year, so this time Im taking a telescope! :)

Hi and welcome to SGL. Turn left at Orion is a good book for star hopping, but I'm not sure if you can get it as an eBook.

Look forward to seeing you around :)

Thank you for sharing your incredible experience with me, I have downloaded Stellarium and found it pretty useful especially for a beginner like me.

I wish you have a wonderful experience in the upcoming trip to Malaysia. :)

Welcome to the SGL forums!

As mentioned, Stellarium is a great resource. If you are interested in the Moon, another free program to download is Virtual Moon Altas https://sourceforge.net/projects/virtualmoon/

Skymaps.com also produce a free monthly map and information sheet which you can print from your computer. You will need the Equatorial edition: http://skymaps.com/downloads.html

Hi there! I've found the Stellarium app on my iPhone and iPad invaluable.

That's what I use to help me star hop.

You should definitely get this if you can.

Paul

Yes, I have installed it on both my phone and tablet, it's indeed a great app, thank you very much.
