Hello.

I've been interested in Astronomy/Astrophysics for years now, been studying it all by myself as a hobby. It's been only a week since I started seeking out other people who share the interest and hopefully learn from them and disguss the topic. I do not own a telescope right now, I simply can not afford it. I'm hoping to get one in 2017 hopefully. So here I'am. :)

Hi there -

Until you get a 'scope, you can learn a lot about 'scopes and the sky online.

Meanwhlie, do you have - or can you borrow - a pair of binoculars?  You would see a lot with them that you cannot see with the naked eye.

Doug.

I used to have a binoculars, not right though. Just looked up some deals on those, might get a pair next month or something. I guess 100€ for a pair should be enought? :)

Hello and welcome to the SGL. Try to get a pair of binoculars. The do not have to be expensive ones to get you star gazing.

Thanks. Planning on getting a pair next month, hopefully. :)

Welcome.

Binoculars 50mm wide are good for astronomy, e.g. 10x50.

You could download Stellarium for free to learn the sky, find out where the planets are and pratice finding objects with your binoculars.

Okay, I'll look for at least 50mm then.

I never actually gotten around to learn the sky, thanks for the suggestion. :)

Here's my copy & paste on getting Stellarium and the instructions for using it:

http://www.stellarium.org/

As for instructions, the most current one's are posted in Wiki due to there being new features & functions being created almost daily. There is also a Pdf. that's almost up-to-date, absolutely enough 'up-to-date' in all needed ways. Here's the Wiki-Link:

http://www.stellarium.org/wiki/index.php/Stellarium_User_Guide

And the Pdf. is here:

http://barry.sarcasmogerdes.com/stellarium/stellarium_user_guide-new.pdf

Hope this helps! Similar planetarium-programs, which is what these type of star-charting software is known as, can cost a few hundred €'s. Stellarium is completely free.

Enjoy -

Dave

If binoculars are wider than 50mm, it is difficult to hold them still by hand. Then you'll need a tripod. So therefore 10x50 is quite right for holding manually.. Some people prefer 7x50, as they are lighter in weight and easier to hold.
